Greetings!
 | | Graphic from ComputerWorld |
You know at PCATT, we're all about providing leadership in advanced technology training. That means matching you with training options that best fit you and your needs whether it's your learning style, your schedule, or your budget.
That's why I really like this article written by Eric Geier for ComputerWorld: Free and cheap ways to study for IT certifications. Mr. Geier explores alternative methods of training and provides resources that we hope you consider. Yes, we'd like you to come through PCATT for training. At the same time, we want you to make full use of all available resources.
All the best,
Beryl Morimoto

Cisco is Still Hot

Cisco Academy Manager Wayne Lewis has been especially busy conducting Academy training for Instructors. You may remember that with Cisco's restructuring of Academies, PCATT attained dual status at Honolulu Community College as an Instructor Training Center and an Academic Support Center. A few weeks ago, Wayne conducted training for an Instructor in Pohnpei, part of the Federated States of Micronesia. Wayne was here in Honolulu and the Instructor was in the city of Kolonia. It was a unique experience which we expect will become routine. If you would like to be a Cisco Academy Instructor, please contact us (pcatt@hawaii.edu). You must have current Cisco certifications and demonstrated knowledge and experience with Cisco in a business or industrial setting. Formal recruitment will soon be announced so you're first to hear about this part-time employment opportunity. Demand for people with Cisco related experience remains strong. Local employers have told us they are looking to hire people with Cisco networking and router configuration skills. PCATT can help you with that training.

We Met in a Yellow Submarine and We're Not Lyon
Our recent PCATT Planning Retreat was held at the Yellow Submarine room at local company, Lyon Associates. We had the privilege to learn about Lyon and how technologies we teach are implemented in their business projects. It was a pleasure to meet Eric Torrante who is a graduate of the Architectural, Engineering, and CAD Technologies program at Honolulu Community College. Originally hired for his CAD skills, he has expanded into Geographic Information Systems and 3-D rendering and he loves his work. Turns out there are several other CAD graduates also working at Lyon. We love their Yellow Submarine room. You too can rent this colorful room located at their office in the Chinatown area. (Of course, we also welcome you to PCATT for your meetings and training.)

Entrepreneurs and Folks With Good Ideas
Ever have an idea for a service or product that would be of value to others or make you rich? Then Start Up Weekend is for you. The next one begins on September 28 and ends on September 30 at the Box Jelly in Kakaako. Designers, developers, marketers, and product managers will enjoy this event where you pitch your idea, attract members for a team, and develop a viable product concept. The best part? You present your idea on the last evening to a panel that includes venture capitalists, Angels, and other experts for valuable feedback. The event is open to anyone interested. Go ahead, try something different.

Social Media and the CIO
"As Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus and other social

networks gain popularity, many CIOs are uncertain how to become involved. Aside from work pressures that hardly allow time to breathe, they raise security concerns and even question the basic value of engaging." -Michael Krigsman, author of article Social Media for the Innovative CIO.
Should Chief Information Officers be on social media? Surely the answer is yes. This is how they interact with the public and set the tone for their company. Of course I'm biased because I personally learn so much from social media and enjoy the network of extended "friends". I invite your comments either way. Whether you're a CIO or not, here's a good article about how to get started with practical steps and takeaways. If you haven't already, you're invited to be a PCATT fan on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, and Tumblr, and comment on Yelp!

It's Back to School
Summer's almost over (sorry for the reminder) and even if you no longer have summers off because you're working, there are blessings: Less traffic in the summer for your commute and longer days so you don't wake up in the dark to go to work. If you were taking it easy this summer and are now ready for training, PCATT is ready for you. Here are our upcoming courses for August.

A Look at Millennials
If you're older and want to understand millennials a little better, take a look at Fancy. This digital magazine/community features high-end products that are posted by readers. To understand why this site fits millennials, here's a short article by Ellen Jantsch, Three Reasons Fancy Fits Millennials More Than Pinterest Does. If you work with or market to millennials, it's worth the quick read.
Note: There are different age groupings for millennials, depending on who you ask. Generally, millennials are born between the late 1970s to the early 1990s.

And finally...
You know we end with something light or amusing. This is

amusing although not of the humorous variety. As the instructions indicate, "Use the scroll bar to zoom in and out" by moving it left and right. The Scale of the Universe 2 was created by Cary and Michael Huang, complete with music by Kevin MacLeod. It's slick. Enjoy!
