Siemens Gas Turbine

Recently, Programs and Training Manager, Jerry Cerny, attended the National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers (NCATC) Summer Workshop, "Preparing Today's Workforce for Tomorrow's Technology: It's Not Your Father's Manufacturing" at York Technical College in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Concurrent sessions included topics such as engineering technology for the future, green technology, smart design to reduce building energy costs, and the choice over whether an electric vehicle or a hybrid electric vehicle should be in your driveway. A highlight for Jerry was seeing technology in use at Siemens Energy's new, state-of-the-art, gas turbine facility which showcased advanced welding techniques, machining, broaching, stacking, and robotic technology.

You hear us constantly talking about the need for training. We recommend it for you and we take that advice to heart.

"How to prepare for the coming IT skills revolution"
computerworld logo

"Call it the tech industry's version of a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma: Businesses have job openings, but IT professionals are struggling to land jobs or move to better ones." Thisarticle from ComputerWorld  written by Tracy Mayor and Julia King is a bit long though well worth reading. The subtitles are provoking:

  • The Current Gap
  • The Looming IT Job Exodus
  • Specialist or Generalist?
  • Plan for Lifelong Learning
  • An IT career: Would you recommend it?

Hopefully it sparks a reaction in you to agree, disagree, or do what they suggest -- to properly manage your career.

Fiber Optics Training, It's a BLAST

Fiber Am Samoa

When the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority (ASTCA) needed training, they called on PCATT. With a grant to install a fiber backbone, training was needed for their Broadband Linking the American Samoa Territory (BLAST) Project. The Project is intended to "replace ASTCA's old deteriorating legacy copper infrastructure, with a more robust and weather durable fiber optic network that will link the main islands of American Samoa, making it possible to produce true broadband services to every household, business, and critical institution in American Samoa." Hands-on training was conducted in American Samoa for 30 employees with favorable comments from the folks at ASTCA. If you've been to fiber training at PCATT, you know that Stan Kubota and Ed Marg do an excellent job.

FPGA Design Flow WorkshopFPGA Workshop

What's FPGA, you ask? Field Programmable Gate Arrays. PCATT hosted a hands-on FPGA Design Flow workshop for teachers to incorporate these concepts into their curriculum. University of Hawai'i community college instructors in the fields of automotive technology, mechatronics, computer science, and networking technology learned a new way of teaching, demonstrating, and testing digital logic circuits. These basic concepts were taught using Digilent Nexys 2 boards with Xilinx software. Lead instructor Craig Kief was assisted by Bassam Matar. Craig is the Deputy Director at COSMIAC, the Configurable Space Microsystems Innovations Applications Center. Funding for the training was provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

A National Awardjillian

PCATT is proud of our graphics intern, Jillian Roque. Jillian was one of 6 finalists out of 30 entries in the student Pele Division, the award sponsored by the Hawai'i chapter of the American Advertising Federation. She was thrilled and thought that was it. Shortly thereafter, Jillian received a prestigious ADDY, one of 66 students out of 5,597 entries and the only student from Hawai'i to win this national award. Wow, that reflects talent (and hard work)!  Read more about Jillian and the project that earned her this national award from the American Advertising Federation.

And Finally...colorfulquestionmarks

You know we end our eZine with something off-beat, and here it is. You're a tech person or interested in tech, so you probably do a lot of reading to keep up with what's happening. Here's a quiz about technology in the news. The quiz comes from journalism.org, the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism. There are only 10 questions, so have fun with it. Take the quiz here.
