Greetings!

I hear this question a lot: What type of training do you think is best for me?

Jim Ditmore, CIO of Barclays Global Retail Bank, recently wrote a piece for InformationWeek that I like. He says, "Every IT pro, no matter how senior, must always be in learning mode, but especially in a lackluster economy." He continues: "So how do you go about building a stronger suite of skills and experience? The journey depends, of course, on where you are and where you want to go." To that I add, it depends on your talent and passion.

Mr. Ditmore makes training recommendations for people at each level from those just starting out in their jobs to senior staff. If you're interested, you may read the full article here. For those of us in tech, learning is continuous.

Mary Meeker-Pano

Internet Trends

Mary Meeker, whose expertise is in technology stock trends, produces an annual assessment of the tech industry which she presented at the D10 Conference last week. You may read the entire report KPCB (Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers) Internet Trends 2012 which is full of statistics to start. Read those or scroll past them to the section on "Re-Imagination of Connectivity." For people in tech, most of this is not new but these are good images to share with folks new to tech. An Inc. article written by Erik Sherman identifies 3 Big Takeaways for Entrepreneurs from her talk and report. In his words:

  • Go east for Internet growth
  • Mobile is moving
  • iPad is hot, but Android is hotter

Mililani High School: Kara and Kalvin

Cisco NetRiders Competition

How would you perform if your networking skills were evaluated in challenging online exams and simulation activities at the CCENT level? A student team from Mililani High School, Kara and Kalvin, competed in Cisco NetRiders against 301 teams from the United States and Canada. They placed 2nd overall, and they're just juniors. Congratulations!

Their Advisor, Kory Takemoto, has been a Cisco Academy instructor for many years as part of PCATT's Academy program. We are so proud of all of them!

Cisco Academy News

With Cisco's restructuring of their training Academies, PCATT is pleased to attain dual status at Honolulu Community College as an Instructor Training Center and an Academic Support Center. There are just five dually appointed Academies in the United States and Canada. PCATT will provide support to Pacific area Cisco Academies and others who believe they will be best served by PCATT.

"There is an unprecedented global demand for trained information and communication technology professionals, increasing job opportunities for people worldwide," Amy Christen, Cisco's Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Networking Academy, said in a statement. Our local sources confirm their need for Cisco trained staff.

Cisco courses are open to the public and the training schedule may be viewed here. Contact pcatt@hawaii.edu if you would like to be notified of upcoming schedules.

TSA students Security Training of a Different Type for the TSA

In coordination with the Honolulu Community College Administration of Justice program, PCATT coordinated training for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Three courses were offered on the topics of homeland security, intelligence analysis, and border security. Transportation Security Officers earned college credits which apply to the Associates degree through this national program funded by TSA. The program has been expanded to UH Maui College and Hawaii Community College. Kudos to these folks who made the commitment to expand their knowledge through this educational opportunity.

Pictured here with their instructor, Courtney Chambers (third from left), are Richard Derrickson, David Vehikite, Christopher Reimers, Alice Cummings, and Karen Kam.

Mosquito vs Raindrop

And finally, for those of you familiar with the PCATT eZine, you know we have something odd or amusing at the end. This item definitely fits the "odd" category. Have you ever thought of what it's like to see a mosquito hit by a raindrop? Well, it's like a "midair collision between a human and a bus. Except that the mosquito survives." Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology worked hard to simulate a raindrop hitting a mosquito. View the hit and the article here from ScienceNews.
