As summer slowly draws to a close, we at PCATT are looking towards the many changes that occur in technology, and training on almost a daily basis. With transitions in software versions, operating systems, and industry trends we are committed to offering cutting edge training and development that is pertinent to you and your workforce. Our "Green Technology" training program is quickly taking shape and has been a hot topic amongst the industry. See our website for more information. Finally, as networking and cloud management begins to set its roots in the field of IT, we are offering CISCO and VMware courses that seek to update and enhance the knowledge-base of those who operate on the forefront of these technologies. Regardless of the change, PCATT will remain the frontrunner for "economic and workforce development programs and initiatives in the state of Hawai'i and the Pacific Rim."

New CCNAS Certification Ensures Quality Up-To-Date Training
 | |
Dr. Wayne Lewis, Cisco Academy Manager/HonCC Professor
|
Recently, Dr. Wayne Lewis, our Cisco Academy Manager, passed the CCNAS certification exam, to add to his current CCNP credentials. The CCNA Security (CCNAS) certification validates an individual's ability to develop a security infrastructure, recognize threats and vulnerabilities to networks, and mitigate security threats. Those who earn the CCNAS designation also receive the National Security Agency (NSA) Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) 1011 recognition, which means the CCNAS-certified individual meets the requirements to assist federal agencies and private sector entities to protect their information and aid in the defense of the nation's vital information resources.
The Cisco Academy worldwide is undergoing major restructuring, and as part of that process, the instructor training centers (which include PCATT/HonCC), must have instructors certified in all the areas for which they provide teacher training. PCATT/HonCC has an international reputation for instructor training, both locally and onsite at international locations. By passing the CCNAS exam, Dr. Lewis allows us to maintain our instructor training sanction by Cisco for CCNA, CCNP, and CCNAS courses.
In addition to the certification requirements, instructor-training centers must also have instructors who have passed the new ITQ (instructor-trainer qualification). Currently, Dr. Lewis is the only individual in Hawaii holding this designation thus ensuring the status of PCATT/HonCC as a leader in the worldwide Cisco Academy program.
The NetLab solution we use for remote performance of Cisco labs allows us to provide instructor training on a globalized scale to individuals all over the world. Dr. Lewis has taught the CCNAS content to instructors in the Midwest using NetLab, as well as professional development to instructors in Guam, American Samoa, Japan, and Washington State.

CISCO Live 2011 Las Vegas
 | |
Bill Becker
Network Administrator/HonCC Professor
|
One of our very own, Bill Becker, Network Administrator and HonCC Professor attended the Cisco Live event in July which was held in Las Vegas. He was among the 15,000 who attended along with approximately 40,000 who attended virtually. We asked Bill if he could give us a run down of what he did there. "If you are a serious technology buff that is interested in networking system, technology trends, or industry predictions then this is the place to be."
"This is not lightweight stuff. It is like a week of engineering school. Classes, workshops and all day labs are available on all aspects of technology, specifically relevant to Cisco products. Conference participants sign up for classes starting when class registration opens, about 6 weeks before the conference. It is like the signing up for college classes at a busy university. There are typically over 12,000 people attending so some classes close quickly. Generally there is always something for everyone, but you cannot just show up and walk in. A well planned schedule is a must. The conference runs 5 days and classes run from 8:00 to 5:00 with events also offered in the evening."
"This type of conference is a good fit for individuals taking PCATT courses. Both PCATT and Cisco Live have courses that directly lead to Cisco Certifications. The conference also has a security component that would be of interest to anyone taking the PCATT CISSP or Security+ exam prep courses."
"There are various tracks laid out to guide you in your session choices.
For example: The Video track helps you better understand the range of video solutions and services that can help guide you in designing, planning, building, and managing a media network infrastructure. Working as a Network Planner and Network Administrator I mostly chose from the Network Infrastructure and Systems track with session names such as Advanced Enterprise Campus Design: Resilient Campus Networks and Catalyst 4500 Switch Architecture".
"The presenters are often the Cisco engineers who are working on the development of the products that are the focus of the session, and thus can offer insight into the operation of the devices. Most sessions include time for questions and answers with the engineers."
"The conference runs very smoothly. There is a large and helpful staff ready to guide you to the location of sessions. Next year the conference will be held in San Diego. This is the third time I have attended and it is always a very satisfying as well as challenging experience. I would recommend this conference to anyone taking PCATT networking courses, who wants a technology deep dive to help them advance in their career or prepare for certifications."

Brace for Email-Attachment Malware Spree
Spam is at a two year high according to M86 Security Labs, which monitors spam levels across selected domains. In a report by Tim Greene of Network World writes, "A sizeable spike in malicious email attachments is just subsiding, but if history is any indicator, several smaller spikes are about to follow that use even more deceptive means than their predecessors." There have been a recent surge of phony email correspondences from UPS that urge the recipient to open the attachment which contain malware. An earlier wave of spam used other package-delivery services like FedEx and DHL.
The attackers will evaluate the success of the attack by finding out how many recipients activated the malware and based on how successful they were, they will probably try and figure out a way to improve in the next attack. Read more on this article.
