Greetings!

Summer may be a time to relax, refresh and renew for the PCATT staff, but it is not a time to stand still. Kicking off the summer, Rose Sumajit, Interim PCATT Director, facilitated a PCATT Office Retreat. It was a day to take stock of what we all do well and to discover where we can go in the near and long-term future. Many changes will be coming to PCATT, but you can be assured that all of us will continue to do our best to help you meet your training needs and to fulfill our mission to: "Provide leadership and training in advanced technologies to enhance economic and workforce development programs and initiatives in the state of Hawai'i and the Pacific Rim."

Sincerely,

Jerry Cerny

Smart Grid Curriculum Gets Optimal "Connectivity"

Incremental Systems Corporation and PowerData Corporation Personnel offer information about their products at a recent trade fair.

In 2010, the Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training (PCATT) received an $833,000 U.S. Department of Energy Smart Grid Workforce Development grant to design and deploy industry-certified courses. In advancement of this grant PCATT is excited to announce a partnership between Incremental Systems Corporation and PowerData Corporation (IncSys & PowerData), who will make available massive real-time simulation software providing a virtual learning environment for operators, engineers and participants. Through its own Department of Energy Workforce grant, IncSys & PowerData have licensed the software and training to PCATT at no cost. The software will enhance the program curricula by providing realistic simulations for participants to experience how to prevent major power system events such as the Northeast blackout of 2003. IncSys & PowerData's primary goal is to facilitate interaction between industry and educators to maximize the level of knowledge capture and transfer.  The complete article can be read on the University of Hawai'i news release section of their website.

Two PCATT Red Hat Professionals Pass RHCT Exam On Their First Try

Red Hat examees

We are proud to report that Linda Martin and Rodolf Sabalburo passed the prestigious RHCSA, formerly the Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT), exam on their first try. The Red Hat course taken at PCATT provided intensive system administration training to help Linda and Rodolf develop the skills needed to effectively administer Red Hat Enterprise Linux -- including installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and system maintenance of local components and network services. Red Hat certifications are demanding and require the ability to apply practical system administration skills relevant to the workplace in a time-critical environment. Read more information regarding Red Hat training and certifications.

New Course Offering at PCATT
I am pleased to introduce this month's guest writer and PCATT's Associate Professor/Software Engineer, Monir Hodges. She will be the instructor of an exciting new course HTML5 & CSS3. Monir writes: "Web designers and developers such as myself always look for new ways to design sites that provide a richer user experience. The latest generation of browser-based technologies provide new ways to design and develop sites with HTML5 and CSS3. One of the advantages HTML5 provides is rich media experience without relying on a third party plug-in such as Flash."
Monir is also teaching other courses on Mobile App Development. Get more information about the courses in our PCATT website.
The Hacks Behind UK Phone Scandal Were Easy as 1, 2, 3, 4GCN logo

In an article written by John Breeden II, we find that recent phone hacks are easily avoided, "The technology behind the scandal that brought down London's News of the World tabloid is actually nothing new in hacking circles. Parts of the cell-phone network are notoriously easy to crack, and the reporters at that now-defunct newspaper were simply following techniques, or paying someone else to do it, were invented years ago.

"Even so, there are a few basic things you can do right now to make your phone more secure. The truth is that the wireless signals coming from cell phones these days are pretty secure. Because of the way most cell phones broadcast their signals to towers, digitally and in pieces to be re-assembled later, they are practically encrypted already. The days of someone with a powerful radio driving around listening to calls are almost over, though this is still the case with a lot of portable phones, like the kind that simply transmit their signal to the base station in your home. I once rode along with a shady character who liked to listen in to the conversations taking place at college dormitories using that method, so be careful what you say on those cordless phones."

10 Technologies that will Change the World in the Next 10 Yearsprinting bicycle

At PCATT we are always seeking advanced technologies that will help us serve the development of Hawaii's workforce. Julie Bort of Network World writes, "As computational power rises exponentially, not linearly, so does the rate of change -- and that means the next 10 years should pack in far more technological change than the last 10. Disruptive technology is, by its very nature, unpredictable, but it is still possible to look at the work being done by R&D labs around the world and see clues as to what the future holds. That's the full-time job of Dave Evans, Cisco's chief futurist and chief technologist for the Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG). At Cisco Live, Evans outlined what he believed to be the top 10 trends that will change the world in 10 years."

Included with the list of top 10 trends, Julie Bort of Network World added her own commentaries based on past interviews with other analysts and visionaries.
