annual Apple Summer Institute and 9th annual IT Summit were held at the College.

With tremendous support from local and mainland Apple managers and trainers, the Apple Summer Institute included special invitation, special registration and open sessions on a variety of educational topics for educators.  "Getting to Know your iPad" sessions were offered each day and proved to be very popular to those who attended. Other popular sessions included "Creating Digital Content", "Mobility in Education", "Introducing the Next Big Cat", and "Student Engagement = Higher Test Scores".  During the three-day event, 253 DOE and private school K-12 and higher ed personnel attended.

The PCATT IT Summit was also a success with 120 K-12, higher ed technology coordinators, educators, administrators, and business and industry IT professionals attending.   The theme for the IT Summit was, "Productivity in the Age of Mobility" with a keynote, panel discussion, and breakouts supporting the theme.  Howard Dicus, KGMB9 Resident Explainer, offered a very engaging and informative keynote to kick off the Summit.  A panel discussion of productivity and mobility was held to begin the second day of the Summit.  The panel included John Bjerke, Cisco Western Regional Manager, Frank Callaham, Apple Education Development Executive, and Neenz Falefine, Community Developer at Oceanit, and was moderated by Burt Lum, Digital Consultant for Bytemarks.  Both the keynote and panel discussion were excellent kick-offs to two days of informative breakouts.

PC Growth Slows While Security Software Surgescampus technology logo

As reported in Campus Technology, while worldwide shipments of personal computers are expected to climb in 2011, that growth will be slower than previously expected. According to a newly revised forecast from market research firm Gartner, growth of PC shipments will dip down into the single digits this year, owing largely to shifts in consumer spending.

Gartner revised its forecast for 2011 down to 9.3 % from its previous forecast of 10.5 % growth. Total unit sales will be $385 million for the year, according to a report the firm recently released, "Gartner PC and Media Tablet Forecast Update, 2Q 2011."  The revised forecast resulted in large part to consumers in mature markets tightening their spending, according to Gartner analysts, or delaying purchases as they shift some of their spending away from netbooks toward devices like Apple's iPad.  To read more here.

Meanwhile, following a significant drop in 2009, the security industry has seen a resurgence in 2010, according to a separate Gartner report , "Market Share Analysis: Security Software, Worldwide, 2010."
