Greetings!
We start our May PCATT eZine with our guest writer, Wayne Lewis, Cisco Academy Manager. He received a special invitation from the Cisco Academy in Japan to train the first cohort of instructors so they in turn could be qualified to teach CCNP TSHOOT. He describes his experience at Aso College in Fukuoka, Japan, not long after the unfortunate earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear reactor incidents. We are also proud to mention that Wayne's book published by Cisco Press, LAN Switching and Wireless, CCNA Exploration Companion Guide, is now translated into Korean. Did we mention the book is also available in Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, Polish (and English)?
Sincerely,
Beryl Morimoto Program Manager Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training

CCNP Training in Japan by Wayne Lewis
 | | Left to right: Mr. Kazuo Kanamaru, Deputy Dean of Aso Business Computer College Fukuoka, Professor Satoshi Kitahara, our star instructor, Dr. Muhammad Niswar, translator. |
"The instructors in Japan master technical Cisco networking tasks with ease - not to diss us Americans, but life in Japan is quite different with respect to the full-on adoption of technology into everyday life - literally everything that people in Japan do in their lives incorporates technology. This is one of the joys of visiting Japan: Seeing the future - the devices we will be using and how we will be using them in five-to-ten years.
The facilities at Aso College were quite comfortable. The instructors spoke limited English and I spoke even less Japanese, so the Cisco office in Tokyo arranged for a technical translator and a narrative translator to work with us during the training. I must say I learned a lot from the translators during our daily excursions for lunch and just talking throughout each day. It was an honor to have had such support - this way I was able to concentrate on teaching concepts and ideas related to advanced network troubleshooting.

Looking Out for Your Career
Statement: IT professionals believe career success is based on intelligence.
Reality: Research shows just 25% of job success comes from intelligence and technical skills. So where does the remaining 75% originate? According to an article by Meridith Levinson of CIO, "a growing body of scientific research reveals an indisputable connection between a positive mental attitude and that ever-elusive notion we call success." Former Harvard Psychology professor and author, Shawn Achor, cites studies where productivity is raised 31% with a positive attitude. Positive sales people sell 37% more and doctors with a positive outlook diagnose with 19% more accuracy. Whether you like or don't like what you've read so far, you can read the entire article with tips on how to improve your outlook.

Family Tech Support
And finally, do your parents, grandparents, aunty or uncle think of you as tech support? If yes, count yourself normal. So much so that folks at Google created a format where you can send self-help videos, complete with appropriate comments, to your loved ones. You can help them learn to do things they commonly ask of you such as taking screenshots, sharing large files, and upgrading a browser. Check this out. Even if you don't need it now, you probably will, sooner or later (maybe even for your co-workers!).
