President's Welcome
Dear Harvard Alumnus, Alumna, For those of you who were not at the General Assembly last week, I'm happy to report that the club has a new elected President, Philippe Le Corre, and a new Executive Committee with new officers and reshuffled roles. The Honorary Board is also welcoming new elected members, which will soon be announced.
Philippe, whom many of you know, is a Partner with Corporate communications & PR firm Publicis Consultants and a Lecturer at the Paris Institute of Political Studies. He previously served as an adviser to the French Minister of Defense and as a senior policy analyst with the Ministry's policy planning staff. He also worked as a Foreign correspondent for 14 years in Asia and Europe and was a Fellow of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University ('03-'04). He is an Arthur Sachs scholar. Philippe is the author of 4 books and numerous articles, mainly on China, in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Le Monde and Foreign Policy. He sits on the supervisory board of the French-American Foundation (France). Philippe has brought immense value and breakthrough initiatives to the Club as part of the Executive Committee for the last two years and he will bring new dimensions to the Club as its President. I'm sure the HCF will strongly benefit from having once again a leader from the left bank of the Charles River! As for me, I will continue to serve the Club on the Executive Committee and support my successor and my successors. The last two years at President of the HCF have been terrific and I think we've accomplished a lot with the Executive Committee and with the support of the Honorary Board. I'm very grateful to all the Club members who have supported us during my tenure.
Last not least, you should all have received the invitation for the dinner event in honor of Harvard President Drew Faust. It is taking place in one of the most sumptuous venues of the République Française, the Salons de la Présidence of the Hôtel de Lassay at the Assemblée Nationale.
100 people have already signed up in just a few days so I encourage to register as soon as possible before it is sold out at: http://fr.amiando.com/Drew_Faust_Paris.html
If you would like to sign up for tables of 8 (classmates, family, friends...) please contact us beforehand so that we facilitate the reservation and registration process.
I look forward to seeing you on November 24th with President Faust! Kind regards, Nicolas Landrin Immediate Past President of the Harvard Club of France France Amériques 9, Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, Paris Web: http://www.harvardclub.fr/

Artistic Encounters ~ Dinner with Author Abha Dawesar
|
| Initiated by HCF Executive Committee member Carine Barco, the first "Artistic Encounters" of a series was on Tuesday, October 12th at the beautiful L'envue restaurant. Carine commented: the event was very relaxed, intimate and interesting. The group was quite eclectic with writers and readers alike. Abha talked about her "parcours" (her background): how she went from banking to becoming a writer, though she had been writing from a very early age. Establishing a close correspondance with a famous American writer from an early age was determinant in her pursuing her passion. She then talked about the making of her books, the process of writing, the film rights and cinematographic future of one of her books, Babyji and her projects. She signed and gave away five copies of her latest book in French, L'Inde en Heritage, to the first five members who registered.
The intimate exchange between artist and audience--hence the title "Artistic Encounters"--is an event series we'll be organizing more of with different types of artists. Each will be unique, based on the artist and venue. We hope you'll join us at the next one!

Harvard Leaders meet in Greece
|
| The 12th annual meeting of Harvard European Club Leaders in Athens was an opportunity for the Harvard Club of France to tap into "the power of the network"--the theme for this year's conference. Held over the weekend, September 24-26, our Club was represented by its president Nicolas Landrin, 1st vice president Philippe Le Corre, Claire Mays, Sally Williams-Allen and Carole Gardner. The latter two participated on the program and all shared best practices with leaders from 14 other clubs in attendance.
They had the opportunity to hear an update on the university and HAA services, as well as club leader experts on creative programming, digital connections, opportunistic network-building, successful membership campaigns and fruitful links to current students. Keynote speakers were a powerhouse multi-ministry alumnus within Greece's new leadership, and a Harvard economist reflecting on the challenges Greece and the world economy face today. The HCF came away with fresh ideas, and inspiration for future club programming.

Art Galleries tour in the Historic Marais District
|
| On a lovely Autumn day, September 29th, around twenty Harvard alumni made their way to a top-notch gallery tucked away in a courtyard in the historic Marais District of Paris. We met with gallery representative Nicolas who in crisp French explained the philosophical motives and details behind Roman Opalka's works at the Yvon Lambert gallery. Lots of grey, lots of numbers and pictures of Roman taken over the years, all equaling a narrative on the passage of time that was compelling and a bit grim. After such an intellectual display, we stepped back out into the September twilight and turned the corner down a narrow street leading to the Karsten Greve gallery. Here Marina Hinkens, explained the rationale behind Gideon Rubin's "Others" exhibit. Simple, calming portraits of people without actual faces made you work to find something of your life that you could relate to in the picture. That was Mr. Rubin's goal in any case. After roaming this spacious gallery we scuttled one door over to the final gallery on this tour: Thaddeaus Ropac. Here, American gallery co-owner Jill Silverman escorted us in to breathe in the large-scale wood sculptures by Richard Deacon. She offered us a glass of champagne and continued to enlighten us on this artist and how he constructed his works. We also viewed pieces by Anselm Kiefer and finished upstairs viewing Picasso-esque Andy Warhols! Our minds filled with compelling images and satiated with philosophies behind them, we each left marveling and satisfied with our night of Art. (Click to see all the photos of the event.) |
