Week in Review
| | Things to remember.... On Saturday we had a quick seminar due to our higher scheduled mileage. We said a few words about cross training, and here are some important points: - cross training can be a good way to recover from injuries while maintaining cardio endurance, especially elliptical or aqua jogging
- avoid other activities that stress the same muscle groups as running/walking
- strength training can be a good addition to our training, particularly with upper body & core exercises
- be careful as we enter high mileages in our training to not over do it with cross training, especially for new marathoners

Building Blocks
|
| Over-training
We're still a couple of months away from going into our final taper towards race day, but we are already in a build-taper pattern with our mileage. You will notice that the schedule has transitioned from a steady increase in long mileage to a sequence of peaks and valleys. This is more noticable in the full marathon schedule, but is also present in the half marathon schedule. The reason for this shift is that we want to reduce the risk of injury while maintaining an appropriate progression towards our goal distance. It is important that we have periods of "recovery" in between high intensity (= longer mileage). Understanding the "recovery" can be key to your success in the training! That's because if you IGNORE the "recovery" portions, and continue to press on with more mileage, you might end up "overtraining" which leads to burnout, either physically or mentally.
Here is a great article on what to look for as symptoms of overtraining, adapted from Heart Zones Training: Recovery and Overtraining Your body becomes fit and strong as a response to the stress you place on it. This is called adaptation, and training is a form of stress. When you train over long distances, hills, or speed, your body wants to make it easier for you by building a stronger heart, stronger muscles, and stronger joints. USA Fit has developed a program for you that builds each week and then incorporates a recovery week. The recovery week may include shorter workout duration and/or a decrease in the number of workouts for this week. It's in this week that your body rests and rebuilds itself as a stronger machine. Really it's in the recovery week that you have the most muscle growth. This point should shed light on the importance of a recovery week. Without it, your body does not have the opportunity to rest and get stronger. If you continue to train without incorporating rest weeks, you will burn out! The term for burn-out is "overtraining." There are physiological events that take place when you have over-trained: - Reduced muscle glycogen
- Elevated serum cortisol
- Iron deficiency
- Decreased bone density
What do these physiological changes look and feel like? - Excessive fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Muscle soreness
- Increased injury
- Poor sleep
- Altered menstrual cycles
- Increased HR at rest
- Poor immune function
Psychologically it can feel like: - Lack of concentration
- Mood changes
- Fear of competition
- General apathy and lethargy
As a group of athletes your fitness level is on a sharp incline. If you've been following the training plan, you should be seeing a lot of improvement in your walking or running endurance. For some who are new to endurance training, this sharp improvement can be a huge source of motivation-so huge that you may be inclined to skip the recovery week to keep the improvements growing. As mentioned earlier, this tactic will lead to injury and overtraining. The key to a good training plan is to find the balance between stress and recovery. Your training plan should provide enough stress that your body is pushed to muscle breakdown, but not injury. It should also provide enough recovery time to allow your body the opportunity to rebuild and replenish itself. USA Fit has outlined this for you. If at anytime you are having difficulties sticking to the plan or feel any of the above symptoms, please contact your coach. |

| Tax Free Weekend | | August 19-21
This weekend, August 19-21, is the annual Texas Sales Tax Holiday (aka "Tax-Free Weekend"). The timing coincides with back-to-school shopping and can save Texas shoppers $8 on every $100 they spend.
The good news is that the savings are not limited to back-to-school items. Most clothing and footwear priced under $100 is eligible for the sale tax holiday. What a great time to stock up on fitness apparel and running/walking shoes!
USA Fit San Antonio members can still use their 15% store discount at all Soler's Sports locations this weekend, so you save even more. To sweeten the deal, if applying the 15% discount brings the price of your favorite shoes under $100, they will qualify for tax-free status even though they wouldn't at regular price. Wow! As a reminder the 15% discount is good on regularly-priced merchandise only and is not valid on bikes or Garmin products. Speaking of shoes, this is a great time to get that "race day" pair for November. You will have time to get used to them without putting on too many miles prior to the Rock 'n' Roll event November 13th. Remember that running shoes typically last for about 500 miles of training.

| Race Registration Discount | | Save $10 on the full or half Don't wait too long to sign up for the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon & Half Marathon! It is possible that it will sell our before race day.

And don't forget, you can save money with our discount code! Use the code USAFITSA to save $10 on your entry to either the full or half marathon! The discount does not apply to the relay and the code expires on Sept 30.
