Things to remember...

On Saturday we talked about Long Run/Walk Preparation.

Whether this is for your Saturday workout, or preparation for the race, the process is similar, if not the same.

BEFORE:  Right now, with our weather, we're not worried about staying warm before the workout, but eventually, the weather is going to change, or you'll be travelling out of town for your race.  You may be using the gear check, or you may just discard that old sweatshirt that's been in the bottom of your drawer for years.  Will you need to take your breakfast w/ you?  Something to drink?  A checklist helps to make sure you "don't leave home without it".

DURING:  Again, with our weather, there's not a lot of guessing how we need to dress for the workout.  But not just attire, we need to remember to bring our nutrition / hydration along with us for the run/walk.  Do you have enough gels / shot blocks, etc.?  How much hydration are you carrying, and how does this work with the water stops that are laid out on the course?  Do you need a headlight for first thing in the morning, or just a reflective light / clothing?  Have you familiarized yourself with the route, or are you just going to follow the person in front of you?

AFTER:  Here, you may be looking at a dry change of clothes, some sandles, your recovery drink / post run snack.  When cooler temperatures roll around, you'll be looking for some warm clothing to put on after the run / race.  After the race, you may want to have your cell phone, and maybe some cash.

Start working on your list, and revise it periodically.

Building Blocks

Massage Therapy

You've heard us say that the only time you're improving as a runner or walker is when your resting. That brings home the point that your recovery is as important as putting in the mileage of your training. In addition to recovery nutrition (which is essential!!) you can also do things to help facilitate your muscle recovery and repair.

We are 9 weeks into this training and you have surely experienced fatigue and depletion as you go home after your Saturday workout. What do you do? How quickly and efficiently you recover from your workouts, especially the long & hard ones like Saturdays, is key to your success in the overall program. Check out this article on the top 10 ways to recover from a strenuous workout

http://uncommonbody.blogspot.com/2006/09/top-10-ways-to-recover-after-physical.html

Massage is a very effective addition to your training and your to recovery.
Massage Helps with the following:

- Relieves muscle tension and stiffness
- Improves flexibility and range of motion
- Reduces recovery time from strenuous workouts
- Prevent injuries and promotes faster healing
- Increases circulation
- Reduces muscle spasms and cramping
- Lowers stress and anxiety levels
- Reduces physical and mental fatigue
- Calms nervous system
- Reduces blood pressure and heart rate
- Strengthens immune system
- Overall relaxation and restful sleep
- Improve concentration
- Improved sense of well-being

The key with massage is to go to a therapist experienced with runners and walkers, and to discuss any problem areas in your muscles.
