 Yoga as Exercise
There's Nia and Zumba, and the Chi's (gong and tai). Also spinning, core-fitness, climbing, fusion this and that, kickboxing and water fitness. Is yoga just another form of exercise to pay for, schedule, overdo, and quit? It's at the Y and your gym along with the myriad of group class offerings. Where does it fit in?
As the popularity of yoga grows, so the does interest in Westernizing it's claims. It's not sufficient to blindly accept the sometimes remarkable claims of Eastern Indians. We want measurements, control groups, double-blind studies, and VO2 max numbers. This is not a bad thing. Author William Broad, who has put many yogis on the defensive, devotes an entire chapter to yoga and fitness in his book The Science of Yoga. Broad reports that scientists have found measuring the effects of yoga challenging. The existing studies have been small and often lack funding. Just how do you measure aerobic activity while practicing yoga?
Like Lululemon tops, there are many styles of yoga. Some studies reported by Broad used a few poses practiced daily, others used sun salutations twice weekly. You can't compare a sweaty Bikram class to a hatha yoga class to an Ashtanga class. And, the experience level of the subjects varied. Some studies found that metabolism actually dropped rather than was "revved up" during yoga practice as many had claimed. Aerobic activity was often less than other activities. Bottom line: The findings of the studies were ambiguous.
But, regardless of the studies and their outcomes, Broad states that despite the poor showing in terms of aerobic conditioning,
"The scientists were intrigued to discover . . . [yogis] nonetheless felt better about themselves. . . reported enhanced sleep, energy, health, endurance and flexibility. They described how they experienced a wide range of social benefits, including better sex lives, social lives and family relationships. . . better moods, self-confidence, and life satisfaction. With few exception, they said they looked better."
If that doesn't blow your Yoga Toe socks off. Read it again. Better sleep, sex, family relationships!! Life satisfaction. Criminy. Can you think another other type of movement, therapy, diet, or BigPharma offering that can make those claims.
Want more?
"A 2010 paper examined more than eighty studies that compared yoga and regular exercise. . . found that yoga equaled or surpassed exercise in such things as improving balance, reducing fatigue, decreasing anxiety cutting stress, lifting moods, improving sleep, reducing pain, lower cholesterol and generally in raising the quality of life for yogis both socially and on the job."
So, call it exercise if you must, but yoga is much, much more. Regardless of what studies show, the proof is in the difference it makes in your life. Say goodbye to Ambian, Viagra, Xanax, and 5-Hour Energy Drink. Hello, yoga.

Get Strong and Study the Yoga Sutra
I like to let you know, and I hope you will do the same, when I take a new yoga class or discover something I think is valuable. I took Cogen Bohanec's class at Sonoma Yoga & Martial Arts on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. followed by his Yoga Sutra class at 9:30. Cogen's credentials are impressive, being a third-degree black belt, yogi and scholar of Eastern Philosophy. Read all about him and SYMA here.
The yoga was a blend of calisthenics and yoga postures. We spent the first 15 minutes (seemed like 90) doing core work, then there was back work, then repetitive strengthening in yoga poses like half-moon and salabasana. It was hard for me, but others (Hi, Penny) didn't break a sweat. It was a great way to build strength without hitting your gym and throwing a bunch of weights around. Did I mention it was really hard? I cannot image how sore I'll be tomorrow and the day after and the day after.....
Cogen has a strong group that is studying Eastern Philosophy including chanting and deciphering the Yoga Sutra. If you're a serious about learning the Eastern Philosophy, Cogen is your guy. Here's a bit from his bio:
"Cogen is currently studying Sanskrit and Eastern Philosophy at U.C. Berkeley, becoming versed in Indian Epic Literature (Mahabharata and Ramayana), Orthodox (Astika) and Heterodox (Nastika) systems of Indic thought, as well as the mythology, history and culture of India."
Cogen is an amazing resource right here in our own neighborhood. Let's take advantage of his passion, knowledge and willingness to share his teachings with us. I'll be there. Note that he will not teach 8/11 and 8/18. |
New Findings: There Is No Such Thing as a Safe Tan
Summertime and the living is easy. A few weeks ago, I wrote about sunscreen products and their effectiveness when "slathered" on. If you still think there's a "safe" tan, there's some new research showing what Dermatologists have been warning for years--that there is no such thing as a safe tan.
". . . UV induction of melanin, as a melanoma-causing agent, works when skin is exposed only to UVA and not UVB radiation. This is especially important since melanoma formation has been correlated with sunbed use as many epidemiological studies have shown. One possible reason for this is that tanning lamps are capable of emitting UVA radiation up to 12 times, or higher, the UVA intensity of sunlight at high noon. Melanin plus UVA is known to cause photo-oxidation, a suspected, but still to be proved, mechanism for the formation of melanoma as we describe in our study,"

NEW CLASS - Happy Hour Vinyasa - All Levels
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an all-levels vinyasa flow class.
I am honored and excited to be offered another class at Westside Yoga Studio. On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class. Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day. A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.
You'll be done at 6:00!! That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch. Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!

Restorative Yoga
I love the response of students to their first or second or hundredth restorative yoga experience. It's the moment when their nervous system shifts from "yikes!" to "ahhhhhh." They leave with relaxed shoulders and brightened attitude.
It's easy to forget that the body knows exactly what to do. The relaxation response is a built in function of our amazing central nervous system. We just have to let relaxation happen. I know, it seems impossible sometimes. Thus, the popularity of restorative yoga where we learn to put the body in positions and let it do it's thing.

Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together. Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze. Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves. Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies. Your friends will thank you!
Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions. I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.
