You on Vacation
Lil' bits of wisdom weave and inch their way into places you'd never expect them. While lounging with the New York Times's Travel section, I came upon "Call Waiting, 'It's Me, Your Vacation'". Tucked neatly inside were tons of useful bites and tidbits. Although it was about increasing your enjoyment on your vacation, it speaks directly to getting satisfaction the "other" days we affectionately refer to as "life".
We've all been there. You take a long-anticipated vacation. Like the Corona beer commercials, you imagine you're on smooth, white sand, devoid of others (particularly children, of course), with a far-away look only a tropical vacation could afford. You save, plan, and dream, and then you're there. Yeehaw! But, ugh, the flight was delayed, the plane cramped, the taxi smelly, and the dead dog by the road saddening. Isn't your room just a couple of stars lousier than the pictures? Oh, well, at least you're not at work. Why are you so damn tired (could it be jet lag) and a bit cranky?
You're still not feeling relaxed and you have an overwhelming urge to check your email, which you promised not to, but do anyway. This unease lasts about 3 days into your 10 day vacation. Five days later, you've already mentally shifted into "return home" mode and start dreading 100's of emails which will be dutifully awaiting your return. You're no different than everyone else. It's what vacations are made of.
It turns out that by understanding the role your brain plays you can actually do something about this ever-so-common phenom. Habits of the mind aren't easy to break between San Francisco and Tahiti. It takes some time and patience. Like preparing for any withdrawal (tobacco, food, sugar) you can start by cutting back slowly. Prior to your departure, practice some quiet time. Call it meditation if you want. How about turning your cell phone off at 6 p.m. each evening. Like withdrawing from any typical anti-social addiction, it's hard. From the article:
"Phones and computers fundamentally encourage, even demand, a constant cycle of stimulation and response. Click or swipe, and something happens. And responding to a ping, researchers say, delivers a "dopamine squirt"--a little burst of adrenaline. The brain gets used to this stimulation and then craves it in its absence."

If you're travelling, give it a try. Ease off the stimulation or most of it (going cold turkey can, in itself, cause stress). Although this article was meant for lucky vacationers, I think it has direct application for everyday life, right here, right now, without the cocktail umbrella or coconut-scented Banana Boat 50 SPF sunblock.

Cocktail Generator
Are you like me and prefer a cocktail over wine/beer? No, I'm not talking about throwing back a few kamikazies or tequila shots or jager and coke. I'm suggesting a well-crafted cocktail with good booze (excuse me "spirits") and interesting add-ons/ins. You know the ones that the bartenders (excuse me again, "mixologists") are charging ridiculous prices for and are taking 5 minutes to make. They're coming in classic glasses you see at estate sales and ingredients sourced from local organic farms.

LotusFeed Yoga Event in Occidental
There are lots. Yoga and yoga-hybrid festivals are happening all over. There are now four(!) Wanderlust Festivals, there's BhaktiFest and Tadasana International Festival of Yoga + Music. They're big, bloated and quite a scene.
But, YAY, we have our own. Right here in Sonoma County pairing Yoga and Food (what could be better!). The Lotus Feed is a grassroots, down home, harvest celebration. It will have the big names, Shiva Rea, Les Leventhal, Ann Austin and Iron Chef, Cat Cora. There will be yoga, kirtan, sutra chanting, workshops, wine, fresh-from-the-garden salads and wood fired pizzas. Plan to spend all day with your fellow yogis, farmers and foodies. This is a small, intimate gathering on a pristine farm in Occidental. Get your tickets early (it will sell out). Register here and I'll see you on August 18! |

NEW CLASS - Happy Hour Vinyasa - All Levels
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an all-levels vinyasa flow class.
I am honored and excited to be offered another class at Westside Yoga Studio. On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class. Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day. A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.
You'll be done at 6:00!! That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch. Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!

Sunscreen Follow-up:
Men & Sunscreen--They Don't Use it
AARP online blog (passed on to me by my AARP husband. OK, I'm there, also). Here's what they said:
" A new survey by the Skin Cancer Foundation finds that men don't seem to understand the risks of getting skin cancer. . . . Nearly 1 in 2 men surveyed said they had not applied sunscreen in the past 12 months, and only 32 percent considered themselves very knowledgeable about how to properly use it. . . Nearly two-thirds of men surveyed thought women needed sunscreen more because female skin is more sensitive to UV rays. . . . Guys' skin, they apparently believe, is somehow more impervious to sunburn and damage. . . . Except that it's not true. . . . According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, men have more unprotected sun exposure over the years than women and they then develop more skin cancers as they age."

Restorative Yoga
I love the response of students to their first or second or hundredth restorative yoga experience. It's the moment when their nervous system shifts from "yikes!" to "ahhhhhh." They leave with relaxed shoulders and brightened attitude.
It's easy to forget that the body knows exactly what to do. The relaxation response is a built in function of our amazing central nervous system. We just have to let relaxation happen. I know, it seems impossible sometimes. Thus, the popularity of restorative yoga where we learn to put the body in positions and let it do it's thing.

Get Your Girlfriends Together

It's fun to get friends together. Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze. Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves. Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies. Your friends will thank you!
