Scarfing *

Scarf.  You may think of that soft, gray, cashmere wrap you wear around your neck to keep out the pernicious winds.  Maybe it brings to mind the gauzy, light as cotton candy, scarves that can be worn with tank top and flips.  Or, maybe the Burberry scarf your aunt brought you back from the UK.  But, I'm not here to chat about fashion, although we could.  I'm talking about eating.

Could we really eat any faster?  They've named an entire industry after it. Order faster, eat faster, and get back to work, dang it.  There is no time to enjoy your meal...you're busy, you're multi-tasking.  While you're doing nothing except eating, check Facebook, play online solitaire, text 5 friends, pay your rent.  Do not pay attention to eating.  That's today's norm.

I did a 3-day cleanse some years ago.  For me, going without food is big deal so 3 days seemed like forever.   You'd think that after fasting, you'd b-line it for the closest Dominos or Micky D's for some real sustenance.  You deserved it after suffering for days without food.

Much to my surprise, after 3 days of semi-enjoying organic fruit and vegetables juices and teas, I took one tiny bite of an apple and it took 90 second to chew it.  I really tasted the apple, savoring the opposing sweet/tart juices.  For the next few days, I actually did eat slower and was more conscious about the food I chose to eat.  Sadly, it wasn't long before I was mindlessly putting food into la boca, chomping it down, and reloading.

If you're like me, we could use a bit of slowing down while eating.  It's hard, I've tried.  For a few bites, I eat consciously, the back to scarfing it in.  As a reminder, here are some tips for eating more intentionally, slowly and purposefully......Check out this list from Jan Chozen Bays(1).  I put in the "pauses".

1.  Look at each item of food, taking it in with the eyes. Notice colors, textures, shapes, arrangement on the plate or bowl.

Pause

2. Take a moment to say grace. Thank the animals, plants, and people who brought this food to you. Be aware of their gifts as you eat.

Pause

3. Begin the meal by pausing to inhale the fragrance of the food. Imagine that you are being nourished by just the smell.

Pause

4. Eat food like a wine connoisseur tastes wine. First sniff the food, enjoying the bouquet. Then take a small taste. Roll it around in the mouth, savoring it. What ingredients can you detect? Chew slowly and swallow. Take a sip of water to cleanse the palate. When the mouth is empty of food and flavor, repeat the process.

Pause

5. If you notice that you are eating without tasting, stop and pause to look at the food again.

No. 4 speaks to me.  I have the unappealing habit of inserting food before I've finished the last bite.  Because I eat many of my meals standing at the counter or in front of the fridge, I often don't see a plate.  I could learn a lot by keeping this list with me, don't you think?  Maybe I'll print it out and try again with each bite.

LotusFeed Yoga Event in Occidental
There are lots.  Yoga and yoga-hybrid festivals are happening all over.  There are now four(!) Wanderlust Festivals, there's BhaktiFest and Tadasana International Festival of Yoga + Music.  They're big, bloated and quite a scene.

But, YAY, we have our own.  Right here in Sonoma County pairing Yoga and Food (what could be better!).  The Lotus Feed is a grassroots, down home, harvest celebration.  It will have the big names, Shiva Rea, Les Leventhal, Ann Austin and Iron Chef, Cat Cora.  There will be yoga, kirtan, sutra chanting, workshops, wine, fresh-from-the-garden salads and wood fired pizzas.  Plan to spend all day with your fellow yogis, farmers and foodies.

This is a small, intimate gathering on a pristine farm in Occidental.  Get your tickets early (it will sell out).  Register here and I'll see you on August 18!

Westside yoga Studio
NEW CLASS - Happy Hour Vinyasa - All Levels
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an all-levels vinyasa flow class.

I am honored and excited to be offered another class at Westside Yoga Studio.   On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!

Restorative Yoga
I love the response of students to their first or second or hundredth restorative yoga experience.  It's the moment when their nervous system shifts from "yikes!" to "ahhhhhh."  They leave with relaxed shoulders and brightened attitude.

It's easy to forget that the body knows exactly what to do.  The relaxation response is a built in function of our amazing central nervous system.  We just have to let relaxation happen.  I know, it seems impossible sometimes. Thus, the popularity of restorative yoga where we learn to put the body in positions and let it do it's thing.

In these workshops you will be allowed to relax and let go while your body is supported with bolsters and blankets and lots more.  We will do a bit of movement, chat about stress and the relaxation response and then spend 90 minutes in positions that we will hold for 15 to 20 minutes.  This practice is for everyone.   Go ahead and put the dates on your calendar now so you won't forget.  And, while you're at it, invite a friend.

Private Yoga Classes

There are lots of reasons why going to a public yoga class is not always right for you.  Maybe the class times are wrong or the location is inconvenient.  Maybe you're new to yoga and feel intimidated by a public class or you have an injury or condition that requires some individual attention.   Private or small group classes at your location at your chosen time can be the perfect answer.

It's fun to get friends together.  Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze.  Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves.  Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies.  Your friends will thank you!

Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions.  I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.

Wednesday Night Change.

I will no longer be teaching my Wednesday night class.  I will greatly miss all of my lovely, loyal students.  But you'll all be in expert hands with the teachings of Usha Carmen, who blends her background in Iyengar and Anusara Yoga to present a well-rounded flow class with attention to alignment.  Please join her on Wednesdays at 5:30.

Westside Yoga Studio Gets It.  Find me there on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. for an hour of restorative yoga (also known as "laying around").  Please come, your nervous system will thank you.  AND just added is a Friday Vinyasa Flow class from 4:30 - 6:00. This class is for everyone, that means you!
