Junk Food Rituals
Nothing screams "road trip" like a bag of Cheetos. Not the small size that (tragically) end up in kids' lunch boxes, or the medium size from the Valero station, but the big bag from the junk food markets, like Safeway and Lucky. On Day 1 of our trip, waiting for me on the passenger's seat was my big ol' bag of Cheetos, alongside a can of coconut water and a bag of overpriced Kettle Corn (thank you, Patrick). Ah, the trip was off to a good start! Destination: Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon. OK, OK, I know Cheetos are not on the list of recommended foods to fuel the body, however, I think somewhere on the bag it says "Real Cheese", most likely after the salt and preservatives. Do you really eat that stuff, Cheryl? Well, it's not like I grab a bag, a Diet Pepsi, Snickers and unfiltered Marlboros each time I buy gas. But, spending 5 to 7 hours in the car driving down Interstate 5 requires some, how shall I say it, soul food. Baby carrots and a green juice just don't do it. There's some protocol when I eat Cheetos. I usually grab one at a time out of the bag, pop it in my mouth to suck off the salt and orange dust-stuff (whatever that it). Or, I put 3 or 4 in my hand mouthing each one individually. Then, there's the decision to do with thumb and index finger tips with their bright orange crust. The bag doesn't get emptied all at once. Sometimes it takes days to finish on off. It does help pass the time in a rote hand-to-mouth way. Speaking of cheesy, check out "Cheeto Shaped Like Jesus, Named "Cheesus"", "The biggest CHEETO In the WORLD!" and "Pulp Cheetos". Hah! Wanna see more? Called the Land of the Giants, Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon are south of Yosemite east of the San Joaquin Valley. It's diverse with huge mountains, rugged foothills, deep canyons and the world's largest trees. Our camp sites were serene and we had them almost to ourselves. Our big-ass, 6-man tent was roomy and the down sleeping bags plenty toasty. I took time to meditate each morning and to do my sun salutations in the actual sun(!). Our hikes were satisfying and the wildlife plentify including 2 bears. And, the trees--amazing. After the day hikes, afternoon nap, happy hour, dominos, dinner, a walk, and 2 more games of dominos, it was only 7:30. So, after cleaning up, we found ourselves in bed around 8:30. With no hurry to get up, we slept until 8 a.m. What a luxury. I can hear you wondering. Did you get another bag of Cheetos for the trip home? Of course not. The return home treat is a rootbeer float (really a freeze) from Fosters Freeze. Is it just me, or do you have a goodie that rounds out an experience, like Milk Duds at the movies? Let me knowhere. I'll post the responses. It'll be fun. |

Two Restorative Yoga Workshops this Month - Lay Around--It's OK
I love the response of students to their first or second or hundredth restorative yoga experience. It's the moment when their nervous system shifts from "yikes!" to "ahhhhhh." They leave with relaxed shoulders and brightened attitude.
It's easy to forget that the body knows exactly what to do. The relaxation response is a built in function of our amazing central nervous system. We just have to let relaxation happen. I know, it seems impossible sometimes. Thus, the popularity of restorative yoga where we learn to put the body in positions and let it do it's thing.
In these workshops you will be allowed to relax and let go while your body is supported with bolsters and blankets and lots more. We will do a bit of movement, chat about stress and the relaxation response and then spend 90 minutes in positions that we will hold for 15 to 20 minutes. This practice is for everyone.

Private Yoga Classes

There are lots of reasons why going to a public yoga class is not always right for you. Maybe the class times are wrong or the location is inconvenient. Maybe you're new to yoga and feel intimidated by a public class or you have an injury or condition that requires some individual attention. Private or small group classes at your location at your chosen time can be the perfect answer.
It's fun to get friends together. Treat your friends to Yoga and Tea rather than Food and Booze. Inviting friends to come together for a Gentle or Restorative Yoga class is a perfect way to enjoy each other's company and do something good for yourselves. Many yoga parties end with tea or champagne and some munchies. Your friends will thank you!
Please call on me if I can help you book a private yoga class or answer any questions. I can be reached at cheryl@cherylthomas.com.

Class Cards - Super Affordable
What's a class card you ask? Many of my students have found it most economical and convenient to purchase a 10 or 5 class pass with me ($100 and $55, respectively). That's $10 a class. Can't beat that. Expiration date: never (well, almost).

Go Back to Your Original State
|
When a Zen teacher says, "Go back to your original state!" he does not ask you to become a caveman, an amoeba or ether. He asks you to become mind by itself, without words, without images, without any kind of notion. He asks you to root out from your mind all thoughts and the many names of many things. He asks you to get rid of all padding, to clear away all debris, to make your mind pure as pure water. This is the mind's original state.
