Better to Give and Receive

Here's the thing about gift giving.  Forget about the excitement, or not, you see in your friend's face when they unwrap the latest Harold McGee book, the tickets to the symphony, the oh so soft cashmere sweater or another tie-dye, locally grown-hemp/bamboo mix T-shirt.  It's not about them.  It's about YOU.  The feeling you get from giving.  When you're deciding what to get your snarly boss, your bedtime snuggle partner, the mailperson who calls you by name, the neighbor with the barking dog or Ms. Wallace, the piano teacher, make your gift from the heart.  It's not important how your gift is received.  We cannot control others (don't even try).  Leave it at that. The pleasure is in the giving.  Don't judge, over-analyze, fret, over-spend or under-spend.  Maybe your gift is a smile to a stranger.  By giving, you are receiving.

Be a good receiver.  You have an opportunity as the recipient of a gift to confirm in the giver's mind that they got you just the right present, whether they did or not.  Touch it, play with it, fondle it, lick it. The giver wants confirmation that they did the right thing.  Don't we all deserve some?

While you're doing your last minute shopping, consider buying a service
service-based or locally created gift.  It can be a fabulous Thai massage from Ja or Iris, a series of yoga classes or private restorative class, an art class with a local artist, or drumming or African dance lessons.  Skip Nordstroms and Amazon, and buy those earrings or scarf from a local designer or craftperson.  You'll save on shipping (oil), plastic (more oil), wrapping (landfill),  and you're supporting local people--that's right, your neighbors.  Walmart will make not a penny from the transaction.  Yippee!!
