In 1982, the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, known then as EPCOT Center, opened.  Walt Disney's conceptual Utopian city of the future was originally visioned as a model community for city planning and organization.EPCOT Center graphic from 1982 opening   Meanwhile, in Hillsborough County, Joe Chillura - Planning Commission Chair at that time - thought it was important to showcase excellence in planning and how these projects are an investment in our local community.  So, thirty years ago, the Community Design Awards were born.

Over the years, diverse projects have been recognized for more than their aesthetic contributions.  Winning projects go beyond great design and actually improve our quality of life.  Looking at some examples of awarded-winners over the years, their positive impact on our community continues to be evident:

By honoring the very best in planning and community design offered in Hillsborough County, well-planned projects can serve as models for others.  These design projects contribute on many levels, from culture and safety to historic preservation and economic development.  We applaud excellence in a wide variety of projects that truly make a difference in our community.  Each promotes a better sense of place and is in an investment in our community values and quality of life.

SAVE THE DATE for our 30th Annual Community Design Awards on May 10th at 6:15 p.m.

We are pleased ABC Action News Anchor Brendan McLaughlin will return as our Master of Ceremonies at Maestro's at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts.

Our CALL FOR ENTRIES is now open.  You are invited to submit quality projects in the following categories:
 
            • residential & affordable housing
            • urban infill or adaptive reuse
            • historic preservation / restoration
            • small business & large commercial
            • institutional, public or quasi-public
            • environmental & conservation
            • sustainability
            • master planning & urban design
            • public participation
            • students in planning 

 

Enter button Three unaffiliated judges from outside Hillsborough County will carefully consider all entries in accordance with our Submission Criteria & GuidelinesThe deadline to submit projects for jury consideration is March 22nd.

We hope you will join us as we celebrate 30 Years of Building Community with quality planning that supports the vision and values of our region and lays the foundation for a thriving future for Hillsborough County.
