RESEARCH ON GRATITUDE AND STRESS

Martin Seligman's research at the University of Pennsylvania gives insight and tips on stress and gratitude. His research shows that people who are grateful are happier and less stressed. In fact he concludes gratitude may be one of the most important predictors of happiness. And don't we all want HAPPINESS?

GRATITUDE CAN BE TRAINED

Yes, research in the field of positive psychology says gratitude can be trained. So let's get trained!

"TOMORROW, TOMORROW-YOU'RE ONLY A DAY AWAY"

A well known gratitude exercise is at day's end to list three things that happened for which you are grateful. But let's be creative and use our power of positivism, be forward thinking and be grateful for what is going to happen tomorrow.

EXERCISE:

For the next week I invite you to do this exercise:

1.    At the end of the day reflect on three matters or persons on tomorrow's TO DO LIST.

2.    Express in writing on your "To Do List" why you are grateful for those three matters.

3.     (a)  To stretch yourself out of your comfort zone (which is always one of my coaching goals), pick at least one item that you have worried about or prejudged as being difficult, impossible, scary, distasteful, or one where you feel inadequate.

        (b)  Then use your creativity to change your thinking so that you are grateful for that opportunity coming your way.

        (c)   Observe whether you feel less stress when planning for tomorrow and in executing your plan the next day.

4.   Try this exercise for a week and start your Habit of Gratitude.

I really look forward to hearing from you. I will listen to you and learn from you.

Annie

"The sun'll come out
Tomorrow
So ya gotta hang on
'Til tomorrow
Come what may
Tomorrow! Tomorrow!
I love ya Tomorrow!
You're always
A day
A way!"
