| ANXIETY | |
Dorothy's famous quote could be summarized with the word "ANXIETY". Anxiety is a huge issue ranging from such serious issues as health, finances, relationships, and career to everyday issues of misplacing your keys or phone. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the U.S. and affects about 40million adults.
When we see a co-worker, family member, friend, or even a stranger, experience anxiety, sometimes our body responds by mimicking the person which causes our own body's anxiety response.
|
|
THE BODY'S REACTION
| |
The "fight or flight" response to stress is our body's reaction to what is perceived as dangerous or threatening. Chemicals and hormones are released in the body such as adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol, which causes the body to undergo dramatic changes. Blood pressure rises, hearts beat faster, sight sharpens, and awareness intensifies. If the anxiety is handled successfully, the health risks are minimal. But during prolonged periods of over-anxiety, the effect on blood pressure, the heart, and the immune system can become serious. Such anxiety has been linked to immune disorders, strokes, heart attacks, obesity, infertility and more.

DEALING WITH AN UNHEALTHY AMOUNT OF ANXIETY AND THE NEGATIVE REACTION
| |
Some people turn to alcohol, illegal drugs, smoking, or food in an abusive way to help them with their anxiety. This can lead to many problems.
|
| EXERCISE | |
1. I invite you to observe situations that may happen this week if and when your body over reacts to anxiety. And I invite you to choose to handle it in a calm manner.
2. Here are a couple of suggestions on calming your anxiety:
- Count to 10
- Deep breaths
- Be an observer-step back and look at the situation in a calm way
- Get more information
- Stop the mental chatter before it starts
- Look for the humor
3. I'd like to know what tactics you use to deal with over anxiety.
4. If you are experiencing some level of anxiety that you want to talk about, I am available to listen. I really would like to hear from you. |
