Just a note...
a note
Greeting recorder friends,

As the regular PRS season winds down, I am so glad to have shared so much great music and good times with you all.  It was really a treat to play Bach with Vicki Boeckman, Christmas music with Peter Seibert, swing with Bryce Peltier...the list could go on!  We'll be back in September and continue with third Fridays of the month - stay posted for the list of guests that will be leading our merry band.

Thank you to all who donated towards Eileen Hadidian's medical fund!  We raised $150 that was presented to her at a benefit concert in Albany, CA.  Her thank you note is below.

Are you an American Recorder Society Member?  Have you sent your ballot in for ARS board member selection?  Did you notice that our very own Jeanne Lynch, PRS Vice-Prez and Retreat Administrator has been nominated for a position?  She is the only representative from the West Coast, and would appreciate your votes.  Please send your ballot into the ARS office by June 5th.

Hope to see a good crowd of you at Member's Night this Friday!

Warmly,
Zoe Tokar

Upcoming Playing Sessions
May 21st - MEMBER'S NIGHT Show and Tell Performances
September 17th - TBA
Member's Night
Thank you to all who have volunteered to play on May 21st!  The lineup is exciting; a young person's ensemble, dueling guitars, a little tango music, and more!!  There is still plenty of room for anyone else who would like to play in front of a supportive audience!  Please contact me at pdxrecorders@comcast.net.

ALL are welcome!  For those of you who plan on coming...please bring potluck finger food to share for festivities afterward. There will also be some sightreading music for interested players if we have time after the performances. Feel free to bring a favorite 5 or 6 (or more) part piece with enough copies for about 20 people to share.

Should be a fun evening! Can't wait!
Sunday Parkways and the
Portland Recorder Orchestra

The Portland Recorder Orchestra Needs You!

Last year we formed a merry band of recorder players and brought music to the car-free streets, during Sunday Parkways, a magic route in different sections of the city where people take to the streets for everything except combustible transportation. Although we were on stage for a couple of performances, the one time we found a place on school steps to set up and play to the bicycling/strolling public, we got the best audiences.  Thus, I think we should do the same this year!

The Parkway dates are as follows: June 27th - North; July 18, East; August 15, Southeast; September 26, Northwest.  http://www.portlandonline.com/transportation/index.cfm?c=46103
See the website for the routes for each date.  I will pick a performance area, based on suggestions and my own scouting.  The last date I will be out of town, but perhaps the band will be self-sustaining and will not need my dubious conducting talents by then.

I propose that we have a rehearsal prior to the first date, hopefully at the Community Music Center, where we can give out music and run through the tunes. Double reeds are an especially great addition as well as some percussion.  Please email me if you are interested in joining.  I'll be on vacation from May 23-June 6, but will get right on this when I return.  Of course, not everyone will be able to make every date and we can have a come one, come all, come whenever approach.  But if a loyal core of players could be the experts, then drop-in players could be absorbed into the beautiful sound with a great mind meld of musical talent.  Let recorders sing from every corner of the city!

Clef Notes - The April PRS session in Review
by Ellen Mendoza

How is a recorder like a twirling baton?  Well, of course they are both longer than they are wide, meant for human fingers, and made to entertain, but the real answer is that they are both slaves to the will of Glen Shannon, our conductor for the April PRS playing session.

According to rumor, Glen is world reknown for the mastery of both, though we only had evidence of his recorder talents on Friday.  As well as his composing skills, and humor and, oh yeah, conducting. We did a pavan and galliard and funeral piece (note: do not play this at my passing - way too gloomy), then a processional by Eastman and then moved into Glen's compositions.  The first was a prelude and fugue, that was kinda like Bach, but not really.  Whatever, it was fun to play.  The finale was part of the Bloomberg Codex, which was kinda like what Glen Miller would play if he had to play recorders.  I have to admit that I failed to swing sufficiently for that last one, but it was exciting to try.

The next day I went back for more with a lesson by Glen, during which he humored my denseness by describing in acute detail each articulation that was necessary to make a phrase sound like music.  However, the real breakthrough occurred when he applied his gift for physical expression to wave his arms to guide me through the mood of the piece. It seems to me that sometimes the notes stand in the way of the music.   More arm waving is in order.  Which gets me back to the twirling.

Thank you...
Dear Friends in the Portland Recorder Society-

Thank you so much for the generous gift you sent.  I feel so grateful that you are part of my community of support.  The fund raising concert to help with my medical expenses, given by AROW (American Recorder Orchestra of the West) was very special.  Titled "A Portrayal of the Human Condition in Music", it presented a variety of pieces describing our life's journey into the realm of human emotions, hopes, and desires - very apt.

With gratitude and warm wishes,
Eileen Hadidian
