The King Küng Quartet is excited to perform for PRS at it's January session. Its Seattle-based members are David Lawrence, Molly Warner, Bill Stickney, and David Solet. All the members lead busy lives in diverse professions other than music, their common bond being the joy of playing great music on beautiful instruments.

King Küng specializes in sonorous low-consort music played on tenor, "little" bass, great bass and contrabass (over 6 feet tall), performed mostly with Küng Superio instruments that blend well. Our Portland program includes a mix of Renaissance and contemporary pieces, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

See you soon!

Notes from our Music Director

Greetings everyone!

I hope you have settled comfortably into the new year.  May you all have a year filled with lots of beautiful music, joy, and personal fulfillment.

Our New Year's session will start with a short performance by Seattle's fabulous King Küng quartet, so please arrive early enough so that you can be unpacked and in your seats by 7:30. The members of King Küng will stay to play with us, so we will have an abundance of lush basses.

For the playing I would like to focus on J. S. Bach and his contemporaries.  We will start off by celebrating the 350 year anniversary of Alessandro Scarlatti's birth with his 4 part Exultate Jubilate then segueway into a couple of versions of the lovely hymn Befal du dine veje. The original melody of Befal du dine veje was composed by Hans Leo Hassler and will be familiar to you all. Bach uses the tune in the St. Matthew Passion and in many of the chorales in his church cantatas. One of the most original settings that I'd like to share with you is by the Danish jazz bassist, Niels Henning Řrsted Pedersen, or NHOP. We will end the evening with an exciting arrangement of the last movement of Bach's 4th Brandenburg concerto.

All Recorder sizes from Soprano down to Contra will be needed, and all sizes of viols are most welcome. Buzzies will not be needed for this session.

I am looking forward to seeing you all again.

Vicki

'The Ancestors of the Guitar'

Hideki Yamaya, Renaissance lute, vihuela, and Baroque guitar

Featuring the music of 16th-18th centuries from England, France, Italy, and Spain

The guitar, one of the most common and beloved of instruments, has had a varied and interesting history.  In its 500+ years in existence, it's been everywhere, and it has some fascinating stories to tell... stories that most people don't know about.  In this concert that aims to both educate and entertain, Portland guitarist and lutenist Hideki Yamaya will perform on historical replicas of a Renaissance lute, a vihuela, and a Baroque guitar, all of which are beautiful both visually and sonically.  A Q&A session to follow the performance.  A fascinating presentation not to be missed!

"Vivaldi's Flauto Dolce"

Mattias Maute with Portland Baroque Orchestra:  Fri, Mar 12 & Sat, Mar 13 at 7:30pm (First Baptist); Sun, Mar 14 at 3:00pm (Reed)
In Vivaldi's time, there were two kinds of flutes - the transverse, held like the modern flute - and the "sweet flute," or flauto dolce in Italian, which we call the recorder. Guest soloist Matthias Maute from Germany will explore the sweet tones of this ancient instrument while dazzling us with some of the 18th century's most virtuoso instrumental music. Monica will astonish us in turn with one of Vivaldi's most bravura violin concertos, Il Grosso Mogul.
