Summer School Getting - Started Checklists

We have two checklists for students this summer.
1. Checklist for students in Moodle courses: http://goo.gl/lG2Ti
We have four courses that will be hosted in the Moodle platform this summer. They are Medieval Studies, Anatomy Honors, Art 1, Music Appreciation. Any students in those four courses should use this checklist: http://goo.gl/lG2Ti
2. Checklist for students in Blackboard courses: http://goo.gl/vS0Px
All other courses will be in Blackboard. Those students should use this checklist: http://goo.gl/vS0Px
Some students may actually need both checklists, depending on their course load for summer.
Please ensure that students enrolled in summer courses receive those checklists.

Vendor Approval Process Updated 5/31/12
We have opened all courses available for approval. Currently, the following vendors have submitted requests for course approval: PLATO/EdOptions, EdisonLearning, Apex Learning, Florida Virtual, Oklahoma State University, and Aventa Learning. Edison Learning has submitted documentation, narratives, and artifacts for Algebra 1. This course has now been sent to the reviewers. The reviewers have 120 days to complete the process per course.
We are working with all Vendors to expedite the approval process. If a Vendor wishes to seek approval, direct them to the following site: http://www.ncvps.org/index.php/educators/vendor-approval-process/.
Please remind Vendors that the Course Approval Process is for teacher led, first time credit courses only.

Computer Programming Cancelled for Fall 2012

We have just found out Computer Programming is being revised and new content will be available from DPI at the CTE Summer Conference 2012. We need time to revise our course so it is aligned with the new standards and will not be able to have the course ready by Fall 2012.
We are going to remove it from the catalog for Fall 2012, but the course will be available for the Summer 2012. We will revise the course in the fall and it will be ready for Spring 2013. We will contact you individually to make sure you drop the students from the Registration System for the Fall 2012.
We hope you will be able to enroll your students in the course for either Summer 2012 or Spring 2013. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Creech at karen.creech@ncpublicschools.gov.
We are so sorry for the inconvenience.
Thanks, Karen Creech

Withdrawing Students

We have a new process to withdraw students. E-learning advisors may now withdraw students in the registration system after the tenth day of class. It's the same process as dropping students before Day 10.
After Day 10, though, removing students will be coded as a withdrawal, and the enrollment will still count in the district's allotment totals. We will issue a "W" grade for the student. Drops prior to Day 10 do not count in a district's enrollment totals. Click here for more details.

Summer Algebra 1
As you know, we are not offering Algebra I this summer as it is currently being revised to the Algebra I Common Core State Standards.
However, we are also aware there are special circumstances when a student may need Algebra I aligned to the old 2003 Standard Course of Study this summer. For that reason, we have added a course to the registration system for the summer titled "Completer Algebra I (Students needing 2003 NCSCOS Algebra I)."
This course was not added as an opportunity for students to accelerate. This course was added to accommodate those extreme circumstances when a high school student has not taken Algebra I yet and needs Algebra I aligned to the 2003 Standard Course of Study.
If you feel you have a student meeting this unique situation, please contact Jennifer Nobles (jennifer.nobles@ncpublicschools.gov) to discuss the possibility of enrolling this summer.

Summer Contact Information Reminder
Central Office Distance Learning Coordinators and Charter Schools,

The North Carolina Virtual Public School is preparing for its summer session that begins June 11. If your district or charter school is enrolling students into our summer courses, it is essential that you complete the form with your summer contact information at the link below. NCVPS must know who the summer e-learning advisor is for each school that registers students. You may elect to have just one contact for the entire district over the summer.
Please follow this link to identify your summer ELAs. Just district offices and charter schools should complete this form.
If you need to make a correction after you submit the form, please submit the form again with whatever correction you need to make. If you need to make a correction for just one school, you do not need to submit your entire list again.
Presently you may not have any student enrolled in NCVPS summer courses, but if your district or charter does enroll students in the coming weeks for Summer 12, we will need this information.
The schools and districts are responsible for the following items:
1) ensure that students are enrolled correctly
2) ensure that students have met the proper prerequisites
3) ensure that students have the appropriate texts and materials
4) ensure that students have internet access and a computer
5) assist NCVPS teachers in contacting students if there is a problem
6) drop students who are not participating by June 22nd
7) act as liaison between student and instructor when there is a communication problem or other problem
8) test students in EOC and CTE courses
9) record final grades
If you plan on having one summer contact, that person will need either the login information for each school or the central office log in. He or she will need to be able to drop students by Day 10, make last minute registrations, see the Admin Drop Report and the grade reports over summer.
All of your registered students need to know who their summer ELA is. Some districts will shorten to a four-day work week over summer, typically taking Friday off. Our last day to drop is on a Friday, and students who want to drop will have to contact the ELA if they decide to drop. Teachers are unable to drop students. That must be done by the ELA. Remember that we have to issue a grade for anyone on the roster after Day 10.
We do have an Admin Drop on Day 7, though. Any student who has not logged in and submitted his or her first assignment by Day 7 will be administratively dropped by NCVPS.
We offer two types of courses over the summer: credit recovery and traditional. Students must have failed the course before to take a CR course. The traditional courses are accelerated. These are our 18-week block courses taught in just 8 weeks. Each CR and traditional courses will require about 3 to 4 hours of work each day, five days a week. Please do not have ELAs enroll students in more than two courses! Even two courses will be very difficult to manage over the summer.
If you are having students work from a lab that is open 4 days a week, that will be a disadvantage if they do not have internet access from home for that fifth day. There are some strategies that can close that gap, though, if that is your plan. Contact your VLC for more information on that.

Grade Reports and NCWise
NCVPS only reports weighted grades for two marking periods in block courses. Each is weighted at 37.5%. Our yearlong courses have four weighted marking periods. Each is weighted at 18.75%. Final exams count as 25% in all courses.
NCVPS posts progress reports every two weeks in the registration system. Do not enter our UNWEIGHTED progress report grades into NCWise as WEIGHTED grades. If you do this, your final grade averages will not match our final grade averages.
Here are the reporting dates for our weighted marking periods:
March 10: 1st Grade Report for Early Calendar Block 2012. (37.5%) March 28: 1st Grade Report for Spring Block 2012. (37.5%) March 28: 3rd Quarter Report for Yearlong 2011-2012 Courses. (18.75%)
May 14: 2nd Grade Report and Final Grades for Early Calendar Block 2012. (37.5%) June 5: 2nd Grade Report and Final Grades for Spring Block 2012. (37.5%) June 5: 4th Quarter and Final Grades for Yearlong 2011-2012 Courses. (18.75%)
Here are the details:
Standard Grading Scale for Fall and Spring Block Classes
Midterm: 37.5% (First Grade Report) End Term: 37.5% (Second Grade Report) Final Exam: 25% (Schools must administer EOC/CTE exams and calculate in this 25%.)
