Vendor Approval Process Update

Vendor Approval ProcessWe have opened up all courses available for approval, rather than the original sixteen listed. Currently, the following vendors have submitted requests for course approval: PLATO/EdOptions, EdisonLearning, Apex Learning, and Florida Virtual. Of these, none have submitted any documentation, narratives, or artifacts. We are working with them to expedite the approval process.

If a Vendor wishes to seek approval, direct them to the following site:  http://www.ncvps.org/index.php/educators/vendor-approval-process/

Direct Vendor questions to don.lourcey@ncpublicschools.gov.

  • Number of Modules: only for credit recovery courses
  • Status: only for credit recovery courses

Enrolling Rising 9th Graders

The NC WISE Year End Transition (YET) is processed the first week in July. This process updates school rosters with the 2012-13 school year assigned students. The student roster in the NCVPS Registration System will be updated 10-15 days after the YET process.  Prior to YET, schools get a preliminary listing of 2012-13 incoming students for their school. NCVPS does not receive any updates until after YET.

Enrolling rising 9th graders in an NCVPS course for either summer or fall can create conflict between the middle school and high school if the enrollment is not communicated effectively between the two schools.

Wake County has a successful process that the district has agreed to share. Due to Wake's high enrollments with NCVPS, the district has an ELC (district contact) for both high schools (Tom Huffstetler, designated lead) and middle schools (Christina Zukowski). If you do not have a method for your district, you are encouraged to review Wake's process and perhaps customize the steps for your district's use.

NOTE:  The following points indicate that a "dual enrollment" form is exchanged between the middle and high schools. This form is not provided, but one can easily be designed to include authorized sign-off space at both schools, and the student's NCVPS enrollment information.

WAKE COUNTY'S METHOD for ENROLLING RISING 9th GRADE STUDENTS IN NCVPS SUMMER OR FALL COURSES:

Please adhere to the follwing steps so that everyone at both the middle school and receiving high school can be in the loop:

 1) The middle school ELA will fill out the "Dual Enrollment" form and fax it over to the ELA at the high school.

 2) The HS ELA will secure approval or deny and secure the principal's signature.

 3) The HS ELA will make a copy of the Dual Enrollment Form for their records and fax the original back to the MS ELA.

 4) Upon receiving the signed Dual Enrollment Form, the middle school ELA will enroll the student in the summer or fall course.

 5) Once registration has ended, Central Services will send a spreadsheet of all rising 9th graders enrolled in a summer course (with the instructor's name and email) to the high school ELAs. (The ELC pulls this information from the district enrollment report, sorts by school, which provides the information needed per school.)

 6) The high school ELA will monitor the students that will feed into their school.

Thank you, Tom and Christina!

NCVPS Grades and Student GPA

GPAThis important reminder is primarily for new schools that have students enrolled this year for the first time with NCVPS.

NCVPS grades are provided to schools via the NCVPS Registration System account in the "REPORTS" tab. (See how to download your grade reports here.)

Data managers must input NCVPS grades into the student's record in eSIS. This is the ONLY way NCVPS grades are factored into the student's GPA. If this process has not been done throughout the year (for year-long courses), or weighted semester grades haven't been entered throughout the semester, it is imperative to backtrack grade reports and update student records with NCVPS grades in which the student and school intends and agrees to apply to GPAs and transcripts. The school data manager or the district data coordinator can assist with this process as needed.

Final grades for early calendar courses will be posted May 14. Traditional calendar grades will be posted June 5.

If your school needs final grades for graduating seniors in advance of the NCVPS schedule, specifically to assess student GPAs for awards and honors, be sure to coordinate with the assigned NCVPS teachers soon.

NCVPS AP Exam Reminder

ExamELAs should contact their AP testing coordinator at your school to remind them about the importance of students inputting the NCVPS code (045) into the 'Online Provider Code' found on page 1, item G of the student's AP answer sheet during administration of the exam in order NCVPS to receive a copy of their May 2012 test scores for our records.  These scores are needed as part of the accountability piece for NCVPS.

OCS Blended Learning Registration

Blended Learning As schools begin to plan their NCVPS OCS Blended enrollments for the 2012-2013 school year, please keep in mind these important factors!

Since there are no limitations on the number of enrollments in the NCVPS OCS Blended Learning courses, schools should enroll intentionally.  Please enroll students in those courses that are actually needed within the appropriate academic calendar time frame.

1. The NCVPS registration system will allow schools to register students within these academic calendar time frames:

  • Fall 2012-- 1 credit block course that runs from August 2012 to January 2013
  • Spring 2013 -- 1 credit block course that runs from January 2013 to May 2013
  • Yearlong course -- 1 credit yearlong course that runs from August 2012 to May 2013

Schools need to be aware of the time frame in which they are enrolling students within the registration system.  Students should NOT be enrolled in the same course for both Fall and Spring if the school has not made the decision as to which semester to offer the course.  Wait to register students until your school has made the decisions as to when the OCS courses will be offered within the school's scheduling decisions.

NCVPS Course Calendars here:  http://www.ncvps.org/index.php/courses/calendars/

2.  These courses are available for registration for the 2012 - 2013 school year:
  • OCS Blended Learning Algebra I will be delayed for registration -- see below
  • OCS Blended Learning Introduction to Math
  • OCS Blended Learning Biology
  • OCS Blended Learning Applied Science
  • OCS Blended Learning English 1
  • OCS Blended Learning English 2

*OCS Blended Learning Algebra I will be available for registration within the next few weeks, but is not available at this time.  We are currently rewriting the course to meet the Common Core standards; we are working with NC DPI to determine if we can offer the OCS Blended Learning Algebra I course as a Part A and Part B course.  More details to come soon as to when this registration will open and how the course will be offered.

OCS Blended Learning course catalog information here:  http://www.ncvps.org/index.php/courses/catalogue/

3.  Schools need to continue to prepare for the OCS Blended Learning program by working with classroom OCS teachers to determine who will partner with the NCVPS content teacher to provide the blended instruction for students. This is now a fixed field in the registration system that the school cannot bypass when registering OCS students.  Each school stakeholder, including the classroom OCS teacher and the school administrators, should have an understanding of how the OCS Blended Learning program works so that teachers are prepared and the best scheduling decisions are made.

OCS Blended Learning program information here:  http://www.ncvps.org/index.php/courses/ocs-blended/

All classroom teachers will be asked to go through a new and improved online training that will be available this summer -- more details to come.  This will be for all teachers, even those that have partnered with us before.

For additional information, please contact Michelle Lourcey, Curriculum and Instruction Division Director, at michelle.lourcey@ncpublicschools.gov.

Grade Reports and NCWise

NCVPS only reports weighted grades for two marking periods in block courses.  Each is weighted at 37.5%.  Our yearlong courses have four weighted marking periods.  Each is weighted at 18.75%.  Final exams count as 25% in all courses.

NCVPS posts progress reports every two weeks in the registration system.  Do not enter our UNWEIGHTED progress report grades into NCWise as WEIGHTED grades.  If you do this, your final grade averages will not match our final grade averages.

Here are the reporting dates for our weighted marking periods:

March 10: 1st Grade Report for Early Calendar Block 2012. (37.5%)
March 28: 1st Grade Report for Spring Block 2012.  (37.5%)
March 28: 3rd Quarter Report for Yearlong 2011-2012 Courses. (18.75%)

May 12:  2nd Grade Report and Final Grades for Early Calendar Block 2012. (37.5%)
May 31:  2nd Grade Report and Final Grades for Spring Block 2012.  (37.5%)
May 31:  4th Quarter and Final Grades for Yearlong 2011-2012 Courses.  (18.75%)
