Greetings!
New York City has one of the most recognizable and beautiful skylines in the world. There are only a few modern cities able to compete with such architectural brilliance. The extraordinary detail of the buildings never fails to captivate me, no matter how many times I visit this mecca of skyscrapers. With construction being such an integral part of my life, I cannot help but appreciate the art and history associated with these buildings.
While I admire and have immense appreciation for early architecture, I am certainly a proponent of new construction and development. Growth fosters jobs, which helps a city thrive and cultivate a healthy economy - all things that keep the candle of capitalism burning.
So, when faced with the option of demolishing an existing building for new construction or preserving, remodeling and modernizing it, I am always meticulous in my analysis. It's a fine line to walk because there are high emotions associated with an existing building, but often it is more costly and less practical to "save" a building than to construct a new one. Careful consideration of the impact (positive or negative) the new construction will make in the particular neighborhood, usually lends itself to the right answer. In this industry, it is our due diligence to both preserve AND construct "good bones."
Sincerely, Matt Seals
