Greetings!
For years, technology has paved the way we operate our businesses - from teletype communication to fax, from email to text messaging...and now enter AutoCAD Revit. This technology has revolutionized the way construction management firms and general contractors interface with architects, engineers, owners, and subs. Our firm has been using business information modeling (BIM) primarily for our self-performed work, on such projects as St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lemoore and St. Charles Borromeo in Visalia, but the capabilities of this software are endless.
The idea behind using BIM for projects is to minimize and resolve conflicts with project plans before construction ever starts in the field. For example, the AutoCAD Revit software can integrate 3D plans (either originated from the architect or drafted in house by our firm) then layers a 4D component, which includes estimating the project based on the plans, and then layers a 5D component which includes a scheduling timeframe. BIM has the ability to work with all trades such as mechanical, electrical, etc., but as of now we are using it primarily for structural components. This collaborative model enables faster decision-making, better documentation, and the ability to evaluate sustainable building and infrastructure design alternatives using analysis to predict performance before breaking ground. This technology, although still relatively new, is transforming the productivity and efficiency levels specifically for our firm's BIM projects as well as across the construction industry. By incorporating BIM at the front end of our projects, we are able to have a competitive advantage, streamline processes and ultimately save time, headaches, and cost.Sincerely, Matt Seals |
