Greetings!

Debatably, Brett Favre should have retired this year. He had a great run and was an incredibly talented quarterback for almost two decades, but many think he has seen his day and should have left on a high-note, sidelined himself and let the rookies have their much anticipated day in the League. He is one of the most decorated NFL players of all time and yet a coach is willing to replace him with someone who has never played one second of an NFL game, just to free up some franchise dollars.

As employers and business-owners, we too are responsible for the decisions we make regarding our "team" and how it will affect the organization overall - both in terms of morale and economics. In an unstable economy, it's easy to take a global look at the bottom line and downsize by letting a long-standing employee go and having a more affordable new-hire step in to fill the shoes. We make a gross assumption that these "rookie" employees have more energy, are technologically-savvy, and have a zest for growing collectively with an organization. The immediate benefit can be rewarding in terms of cash-on-hand, however, the unforeseen costs like the lack of industry experience and on-the-job training, are immeasurable. Overlooking an existing employee's expertise and merely laying off a key employee to cut overhead is a poor decision. As business owners and managers, we are responsible for recognizing excellence and stewarding these employees into life-long members of our team. After all, the benchmark for success doesn't change, so we must retain our employees that work well, work fast, work lean and produce results.

Sincerely,

Matt Seals

Saint Agnes Medical Center's Gamma Knife Featured in SkyWest Magazine

The Gamma Knife, a cutting-edge instrument used in radio-surgery, was installed at Saint Agnes Medical Center in 2007 by Seals/Biehle General Contractors, and was featured in last month's issue of SkyWest Magazine (United Express.) This noninvasive treatment, available at only 200 medical facilities worldwide, is one of the reasons Central Valley healthcare is making a name for itself around the country. Furthermore, Saint Agnes is among a small group of pioneers using the prestigious and most precise version of the Gamma Knife, the Perfexion.

Fierce Conversations Examines the Positive Role of  Straight-Forward Conversations

In Fierce Conversations: Achieving Success at Work & in Life,One Conversation at a Time, Susan Scott delivers a powerful description of the impact a conversation can have on companies, individuals' careers and personal relationships. Scott, the force behind Fierce, Inc., an internationally recognized leader in cultural transformation, has trained, educated and worked closely with executives all over the world. Through her experience, she has gained an insightful understanding of both the positive and negative role conversations can play in an organization.

It's no secret that communication can make or break a relationship, and furthermore, can make or break a company. Scott emphasizes the need for "real," truth-bearing and strategically-driven conversations, which will ultimately save companies money, save individuals time and address the real issues at hand in a productive and efficient manner. Too often the easier way out of a tough situation is for people to throw truth and reality to the wind in exchange for approval and an easier way out of the conversation. Sharing opposing views, however, is incredibly healthy and often more productive than simply rolling with the punches.
