2010-2011 World Affairs Lecture Series

Daniel Griswold
The Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy (UCCD) is pleased to announce the 2010/2011 Ambassador John Price and Marcia Price World Affairs Lecture Series, in partnership with Westminster College's Weldon J. Taylor Executive Lecture Series and American Express.

Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 7:00 PM
Mad About Trade:
Why Main Street America Should Embrace Globalization
Daniel Griswold, Director, Center for Trade Policy Studies,
Cato Institute

Not since colonial days have Americans earned or spent a higher share of their income in the global economy than they do now. In our current economic downturn, terms like "free trade" and "globalization" are often derided by politicians and commentators as a threat to middle-class "Main Street" Americans. Daniel Griswold makes a persuasive case against US protectionism and presents a clear view of America's changing place in the world economy, illustrating how low-income and middle-class Americans are the most likely to benefit from the global marketplace in the form of lower prices, greater variety, and better quality of goods. For details and a complete list of speakers, please visit our website.

All lectures are free and open to the public, and held in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall at Westminster College.

Overflow parking available in the neighborhood alongside 1300 East, and at the Sugar House Stake Center (1100 E. 1700 South | Salt Lake City, Utah 84105).

Tune in for this month's Global I.Q. with The Economist on:

Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 8:00 AM
Latin America at 200
Featuring Michael Reid, Americas Editor, The Economist

As many Latin American countries commemorate the 200-year anniversary of their independence, the region has much to celebrate. The majority of the area's economies have strengthened in recent times, demonstrating resilience during the global recession because of sound macroeconomic policies and increased foreign investment. Join Michael Reid, Americas editor for The Economist and author of "Special Report: Latin America at 200, " and Jim Falk, president and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth, for Global I.Q. with The Economist as they discuss Latin America at 200. For more information and to register, please visit our website.

Global I.Q. with The Economist is a program created by the World Affairs Council of Dallas Fort/Worth (WACDFW), and sponsored by Texas Capital Bank, in association with The Economist, and in cooperation with the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA).

"In August, the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy had the opportunity to welcome visitors from Indonesia, participants in the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). The International Visitors traveled to Utah to observe the breadth and scope of religious diversity in the United States. The group included members of the Hindu, Christian and Islamic faiths. The Muslim visitors were celebrating Ramadan at the time of their visit.

I had the opportunity to travel with them and accompany them to several of their professional appointments. The morning was dedicated to learning about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first stop we went to was the West High School LDS Seminary [pictured]." Continue reading.
