April 1, 2010. Salt Lake City, Utah.
In a small room in a YWCA indowntown Salt Lake City, a dialogue is taking place that could help shape the future of a young country more than 6,000 miles away.

A group of four women from Kazakhstan have traveled to Utah as guests of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program - administered locally by the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy - to examine "Non-governmental Organization's Management of Youth Programs."

Among them, Dana is the president of the Youth Congress of Almaty, the largest city in and former capital of Kazakhstan. She is 22, almost as old as her country. Indeed, Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991. For that reason, and many others, Dana says that youth are not used to engaging in civic activities.

One of the primary reasons for traveling to the United States is to explore ideas and programs that would motivate and involve youth in their communities and with their government.

Dana says she is here to observe, "... to figure out how managing youth programs works, how [Americans] do it, how they raise funds, so I can take something I need back home and apply it." Continue reading.
