What's going on at WORD?

I Lego N.Y.: A Playful Homage to New York City, now in our front window.
Lots of great new books in the store this month, including the one in the photo above: I Lego N.Y. You may remember Christoph Niemann's fantastic homage to the many details of our fair city on the NYT's Abstract City blog in February, but if not, you can view it here. If you've been reading our picks of the week at Largehearted Boy, you know that one of our favorite books of the last month has been debut novel Matterhorn, by Karl Marlantes. This is just one of the best novels you'll read this year. It's long and grim (much like its setting, the Vietnam War) and absolutely worth reading to the end. It took thirty years of work and a bizarre set of coincidences for the book to reach publication, so think of it as the book equivalent of a finely-aged whiskey. We hope you'll read it soon. We also hope you'll buy it from us so that you can help us join a campaign that our fellow booksellers (and lovers-of- Matterhorn) at Maria's Bookshop in Durango, Colorado, began. They've challenged bookstores across the country to donate a portion of the sale of each copy of Matterhorn to their local chapter of Disabled American Veterans, and we're taking them up on that challenge. Whether you buy it in the store or online, we will donate $2 for each copy of Matterhorn we sell. Spread the word! Did you know it's National Poetry Month? Of course you should celebrate with some poetry. But if you prefer the familiarity of prose, we recommend checking out Poems Out Loud, which will be serializing a chapter from the new novel Nothing Happened and Then It Did by Jake Silverstein in eight parts in April. (The chapter is about a poetry contest in Reno, and if that's not enough to pique your interest, then what would be?) Finally, we've got a contest for all of you, from fashionista readers to those who wear the same pair of jeans every day. We've been reminding you for the last few months that thanks to our new website, you can shop WORD whenever you want---and wearing whatever you want, with no regard for social convention. So now we want to know: What do you wear when you shop WORD online? Thanks to our friends at Scribner, we have two copies of the just-released book The Thoughtful Dresser: The Art of Adornment, The Pleasures of Shopping, and Why Clothes Matter, by Linda Grant, to give to our favorite submissions! We'll give one book and one of our fashionable new green jute tote bags to the best answers to our question. All photos must be PG-13. Bonus points will be given to those who manage to incorporate the wares of Greenpoint businesses into their pictures. Send jpegs to info@wordbrooklyn.com by 4/23 to be entered. |
April events at WORD
|
|
Spring is officially upon us, and the April showers have started
early. There will be plenty of blooming, raining and sneezing in the
weeks to come, but regardless of what the weather or your allergies are
up to, our
April events schedule aims to provide some sunny relief. Here's what
we have on deck:

YA WEEK AT WORD!
Tuesday, 4/6, 7:30pm: Adrienne
Maria Vrettos and The Exile of Gigi Lane Thursday, 4/8, 7:30pm: YA NOT?: Fanboys and Gentlemen We're starting the month off with the book launch for Greenpoint author Adrienne Maria Vrettos's latest book. Heathers meets Bring It On in The Exile of Gigi Lane, where a high
school queen bee's rise to glory is nothing compared to her fall from
it. And then we're journeying to the other side of YA literature two days later with a visit from Barry Lyga (The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl) and Michael Northrop (Gentlemen). They'll join us to talk about so-called "boy books" and possibly dare each other to act irresponsibly in honor of the teenage boys for whom they write. Facebook RSVP here.
Tuesday, 4/13, 7:30pm: Arthur Phillips and The Song Is You Join us for a reading and discussion with Arthur Phillips. Each song on Julian's iPod, "that greatest of all human inventions,"
is a touchstone. There are songs for the girls from when he was single,
there's the one for the day he met his wife-to-be, there's one for the
day his son was born. But when Julian's family falls apart, even music
loses its hold on him. Until one snowy night in Brooklyn, when
his life's soundtrack--and life itself--start to play again... Facebook RSVP here.
Thursday, 4/15, 7:30pm: Launch party for Reality Matters Top Chef. America's Next Top Model. Survivor. Dancing with the Stars.
American Idol. Big Brother. The Biggest Loser. Everyone has a guilty
reality television pleasure, and now everyone can have a book to celebrate those guilty pleasures: Reality Matters: 19 Writers Come Clean About the Shows We Can't Stop Watching. Meet editor Anna
David; contributors Austin Bunn, Amelie Gillette,
Helaine Olen, Rex Sorgatz; and possibly a special Skyped guest. (Fingers crossed that it's Snooki, guys!) Facebook RSVP here.
Sunday, 4/18, 3pm: Bananagrams
in the Basement is back! We're obsessed with this fast-paced anagram game and we know Greenpoint is too. If you haven't played, it's like Scrabble without
the board (or those pesky points). Plus, this month, we'll test out more fruity
fun: Pairs in Pears and Appletters! Facebook RSVP here.
Wednesday, 4/21, 7:30pm: Bryan Charles & Pavement's Wowee Zowee Bryan Charles will read from and talk about his new book to celebrate its launch. Part of
Continuum's acclaimed 33 1/3 series, it's about the
rock band Pavement and their third album, Wowee Zowee. Featuring extensive new interviews
with Stephen Malkmus, Scott Kannberg, Mark Ibold, Bob Nastanovich and
Steve West. He'll be interviewed by Matthew Perpetua of
Fluxblog. And there will be some music, of course! (And wine too.) Facebook RSVP here.

Thursday, 4/22, 7:30pm: Earth Day with Eco-Chic Home Celebrate
Earth Day with Emily Elizabeth Anderson! She'll demo some of the fantastic ideas in her
new book, Eco-Chic Home: Rethink, Reuse and Remake Your Way to Sustainable Style. Facebook RSVP here.
Sunday, 4/24, 10:30 am: Let's Get Handy: Klutz Crafting Hour for Kids Get handy with Klutz crafting kits: we'll make thumb print animals,
people & things, and create hand art with pompoms, googly eyes,
crayons and glue. We'll provide the materials, plus
healthy refreshments and storytime too. Bring the whole family for a fun
morning at the bookstore! Free and open to kids ages 3 and up. Facebook RSVP here.
Wednesday, 4/28, 7:30pm: Luis Alberto Urrea and Christopher Cardinale Acclaimed author Luis Alberto Urrea and Brooklyn artist Christopher
Cardinale meet up at WORD to discuss their recent collaboration, Mr. Mendoza's Paintbrush, a popular short story from Urrea's Six Kinds of Sky that is now a stunning graphic novel. Luis will talk a little
bit about the story and its inspiration and read briefly from the book; Christopher will talk about how the story became a graphic novel and
show some slides of artwork. Facebook RSVP here.

Book Club
|
|
Our book club pick for April is Brooklyn by Colm Toibin. Set after World War II, this story takes you from Ireland to Brooklyn alongside Eilis Lacey when she emigrates in search of a job. Toibin's writing is subtle and sure to the point that it's not until you put the book down that you realize how caught up you were in the story. His characters are true and the picture he paints of 1950s-Brooklyn is irresistible. In short, this is the rare book that you, your mom, your dad, and your grandmother will all enjoy.
We'll discuss Brooklyn here on Saturday, May 1 at noon, and Wednesday, May 5 at 7:30pm. As always, it will be 10% off in-store and online all month. (And did you know that you can order it online but choose to pick it up in-store, so you don't pay any shipping? Now you do!)

The Last WORD
|
|
You know that we like to recommend books---hey, that's the best part of the job. We've got staff picks all over the shelves and we even have individual pages of staff picks on the website. But did you know that some of our favorite books were originally recommended to us by customers? Or that we regularly take customer advice on which books we should be carrying, and that many of those books end up being our bestsellers? It's true, and it's your recommendations that help us keep WORD well-stocked.
We'd like to start connecting your favorites with other WORD customers, so we'll be keeping blank review forms at the front counter for
you to fill in. To kick it off this month, when you come in to fill out a review, you'll get 10% off any book you buy that day! (Think of it as an almost-employee discount.) So get to thinking about the book you want everyone else in Greenpoint to read, and we'll see you soon.
