What's going on at WORD?
|
|

This is what you miss when you don't check out WORD events, people. Maple bacon cupcakes at the WORD sex writing event, 22 October 2009, courtesy of Kumquat Cupcakery.
Here at WORD, we're unpacking books as fast as we can and they're coming in even faster. There are just too many good books coming out! Too many! Do us a favor and come buy a few, wouldya? That way we'll be free to get back to our other fall pastime: hoping beyond hope that Peter Pan will start making a pumpkin-flavored donut. So, it's November already. Wow. There's at least one good thing about that, though: it's First Independent Bookstore Week NYC, thanks to the IBNYC! Read on to the events section to find out how we're celebrating here at WORD. Hint: it involves grilled cheese sandwiches and an essay contest (the two are not related). (Though we invite poetry about grilled cheese, especially haiku and villanelles, at any time of year.) This time of year, we also break out the 2010 calendars. We've got almost every Moleskine planner there is, but don't wait too long to buy them---the most popular ones tend to disappear pretty quickly. We've also got a nice assortment of boxed calendars and wall calendars, since for some of us, Google Calendar can never replace the satisfaction of crossing out days with a marker or triumphantly ripping off another page from the calendar. To the left are some images from a new calendar we're trying out this year from Post Typography, which should be perfect for all you font nerds out there. We've started a new blog post series; have you seen it? It's called WORD on Wednesdays, and it's designed to give you both a peek at our front table and a peek into how we decide which books we decide to feature there every week. Tuesday is traditionally the day when new books come out, so Wednesday is the day when our table is at its freshest. Here's the latest post---feel free to let us know what you think! Finally, though we ARE getting ready for the holidays, we're not going to tell you about our plans just yet. Look for a special newsletter in a few weeks with all our plans to make your holiday season easier and more bookish, complete with a selection of our favorite gifts (hint: they all have covers). Until then, here's a great video about the making of one of our holiday picks, the long-awaited The Red Book, by Carl Jung. |
This month at WORD
|
|
Philosophizing, interviewing, debating, eating, writing and crafting. Each event
we have planned at WORD for November has some special interactive
component to it that puts YOU, dear friend, in the driver's seat! Or the reader's seat. Or something.
Tuesday, November 3, 7:30 pm: Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates Daniel Klein and Thomas Cathcart
explore what the great theologians, psychotherapists, and wiseguys have
to say about life, death and the hereafter in their new book. Featuring Freud! Groucho
Marx! Lily Tomlin! Woody Allen! Zombies! and more! Join us for the enlightened duo's only Brooklyn appearance. Facebook RSVP.

Thursday, November 5, 7:30 pm: Sex, Drugs, and Vampires: Everything You Secretly Wanted To Know About YA But Were Too Afraid To Ask YA NOT? (a literary salon for not-so-young adults) returns! Our latest YA NOT? event features authors Libba Bray (Going Bovine), Carolyn MacCullough (Once a Witch) and Robin Wasserman (Skinned),
discussing the new landscape of young adult fiction. As a special
twist, not only will our authors interview each other, they will
solicit questions from the audience in advance that will be randomly
selected from a hat and answered during the event. Send your questions
to stephanie@wordbrooklyn.com or tweet them to us @wordbrooklyn. YA NOT? is aimed at teachers, librarians, agents, editors, writers, and other adults who love YA---but teens are welcome too! Facebook RSVP.
Thursday, November 12, 7:30 pm: It's Obsolete! Or Is It? Come debate the obsolescense of formerly everyday ideas and objects with Anna Jane Grossman, author of Obsolete: An Encyclopedia of Once-Common Things Passing Us By.
We invite you to spend a few minutes stating your case for or
against the author's collection of obsolete items and topics. (So far, we've got people defending analog clocks, newspapers, cursive writing, and body hair!) Get more info by reading this blog post and sign up to debate: email obsoletethebook@gmail.com or kelly@wordbrooklyn.com. Facebook RSVP.
As part of the First Independent Bookstore Week NYC, November 15-21, WORD will be hosting two special events:
Sunday, November 15, 2 pm: Kids' Event: The Duchess of Whimsy! Brooklyn author/illustrator team Randall and Peter de Sève will join us for a reading of their book, The Duchess of Whimsy, and snacks! The Greenpoint Food Market will provide grilled cheese sandwiches and milk during storytime. They helped us secure local vendors to provide grilled cheese sandwiches and milk during storytime. (Thanks to Brooklyn Standard, Pampered Cow, Sweet Pies Brooklyn and You Can't Eat Bread? for donating their goods for hungry readers!)This event is also part of the B61 Read and Ride we have organized with Freebird Books. Get all the info on this shop local, eat local collaboration here.
Make a day of it! Ride the B61 bus from Greenpoint to Red Hook (or
vice versa) and support indie bookstores and local food producers along
the way! Facebook RSVP.
Wednesday, November 18, 7:30 pm: State By State and Neighborhood By Neighborhood essay contest Editor Sean Wilsey plus contributor guests celebrate the paperback release of State By State, a
wonderful collection of essays from acclaimed writers, about the states
they love. WORD is hosting a writing contest in the same spirit: Neighborhood by Neighborhood. Write a short essay about your favorite part of NYC, from Washington Heights to Vinegar Hill to Greenpoint! Send submissions, between 500 and 1000 words, to kelly@wordbrooklyn.com by November 12th. Winner gets an autographed copy of the book, a WORD gift certificate and a chance to read their winning piece at the event. Facebook RSVP.
Sunday, November 22, 2-4 pm: Thankful Giving Crafternoon! Join Maura Madden, author of Crafternoon,
for an afternoon of crafting for a good cause. Crafters of all ages are
welcome to help us make Thanksgiving cards and decorations for the food pantry at the Greenpoint Reformed Church. Want to do
some crafty homework? Donate a handknit or crocheted hat, scarf, or
pair of mittens. And we'll have some yarn and knitting needles on hand
if you need to add a few rows to a scarf or a pompom to a hat. Please
bring two cans of food or a handmade winter accessory to the event. Facebook RSVP.
All events are FREE and open to the public. You can keep up with our latest event news by looking at our events page. We don't require an RSVP, though we appreciate them from Facebook users! If you can't make it to an event, we are always happy to take an order via phone (718 383 0096) or email (orders@wordbrooklyn.com) for a signed book from an event. We're happy to ship books as well. |
Book Club
|
|
Our book club pick for November is Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry. Yes, it looks just like an auction catalog. That's because it is an auction catalog. But it's also a love story, from beginning to end. Curious?
We'll talk about Important Artifacts at 7:30pm on Wednesday, December 2, and at noon on Saturday, December 5. The book will be 10% off all month. Remember, you don't need to have come before to be a part of our book club! Just read the book and show up at a meeting time.
