The date of the Google training session has been changed. Due to a miscommunication, we informed you midweek that the program will be held next Wednesday, Sept. 29.. Same time, same place, same excellent program.

Find out how to use Google to its full capacity when trainer Jake Parrillo, midwest global communications and public affairs manager for Google, comes to Cleveland to train you in the myriad other uses of the technology. For a review of the Chicago SPJ event he led, see the review by Amanda Maurer, digital editor for the Chicago Tribune, at the SPJ national blog net worked.

The event will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Cleveland, 1111 Lakeside Ave., Cleveland, OH 44114. You must be registered to attend the workshop. Light refreshments will be served.

If you registered for the workshop as originally scheduled, you are fine and do not need to do anything. If you have not done so, please click here to register.
Oct. 23 - Learn Final Cut Pro

The Final Cut Pro class on Saturday, Oct. 23 is full, but if you would like to be on a waiting list in case someone drops out, please contact us at spjcleveland@me.com

The workshop will be held at Lorain County Community College from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Take advantage of the expertise and facilities there to learn a valuable skill in a single morning, for a fraction of the price you'd usually pay. Final Cut Pro is a "nonlinear editing" software that's designed to edit video.

Teaching the class will be Dennis Ryan, digital media professor at LCCC. This workshop will cost only $10 for SPJ members, $15 for nonmembers.

The class will be held in Lab PC-108 in Patsie Campana Building, located next to Advanced Technologies on the LCCC campus, at 1005 N. Abbe Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035.

The LCCC classroom is equipped with 24 MacIntosh computers, so registration is limited to that number. Participants will need to bring their own video camera and its USB cord, though it is possible we may have a couple to loan.

Awards, Awards!
As mentioned last week, your very own Cleveland Pro Chapter has been named one of the nation's top three chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists in the big-city category. We'll be getting an award at the National Convention in Las Vegas, at the final banquet on Oct. 5.

Your editor neglected to mention last week that the chapter was given top marks for its programming, which was called a "fantastic variety of activities" by Region 4 Director Jeremy Steele. He also noted that our chapter also "does a great job of having programs regularly." Congrats to last year's Program Chair, Claudia Taller, who is our current president, and to those from years past who created this tradition. We are delighted to note that our new Program Chair, Audrey McCrone, has jumped right into that role and set up several activities mentioned in this newsletter, as well as some we're not yet ready to publicize, but have in the works.

Also noted in our nomination was the "fantastic" Region 4 conference we hosted last spring, and Writer's Week, our newsletter, which Steele called "the best of its kind that I receive." (Somehow, your editor did remember to mention this last week.)

We are deeply grateful for the honor, which chapter delegate Tony Kozlowski, chief organizer of the April conference, will pick up in Las Vegas on our behalf. Congrats also to immediate past president Cliff Anthony and other board members who worked really hard to pull it off!

That's not the only award we heard about last week. The Ohio SPJ Awards have been announced and last week we named the print winners from our area, which includes all of northern Ohio, from Toledo to Youngstown, Akron and Canton. This week we're listing the broadcasters who won from our area. For full results, visit the Ohio SPJ Awards website and download a PDF list of winners in the categories of your choice.

There will be a luncheon Oct. 30 at the Ohio State football stadium to honor the recipients. Arrive at 11:30 a.m. at the Huntington Club (Club Room Three) at Ohio Stadium, 411 Woody Hayes Drive in Columbus, where you'll enjoy "tailgate fare" and get a chance to tour the stadium and facilities -- the Buckeyes won't be there, though. They will be playing an away game at Minnesota.

Tickets are $50 each, $30 for students. For tickets, mail a check payable to "Ohio SPJ Awards" to Tom Moore, 4337 Chanticleer Drive, Fairview Park, OH 44126.  Ticket orders must be received by October 22nd. (Editor's note: We hope to figure out the online ticket ordering system soon -- it was not working for us at deadline time!)
