President's Message
| SPJ Cleveland will soon be
sending Cliff Anthony and Tony Kozlowski to Las Vegas as our delegates
at the 2010 Convention & National Journalism Conference. They'll
select the new national SPJ board members. In the July-August issue of Quill, we had the opportunity to read about the candidates seeking positions. Darcie
Lunsford, the current National Secretary-Treasurer and South Florida
Pro chapter President, is running unopposed for the position of
President. She's an editor at the South Florida Business Journal, and
she says this about journalism today: "It is imperative that
journalists not cede our core values in the face of industry upheaval
and economic pressure . . . Professional journalists seek truth, act
independently and stand accountable for what they report." Then she
goes on to say we stand together in SPJ and we should not be fearful. If
we're held back by anything, it's usually fear, so I respect that
Darcie brings fear, a personal matter and at the heart of who we are
and how we act, to the forefront. SPJ's concerns are Cleveland's
concerns, and being part of the Convention is important. I'm glad
Cliff and Tony, who have been in SPJ leadership for years, will
represent our interests at the Convention, and they will, as Darcie
says we all must, "tackle it head on, driven by the belief that ethics,
credibility and professional journalism matter." Claudia Taller

| THERE'S STILL TIME! | Missed the National Convention early bird registration rates? It's OK
because you can still make the pre-registration deadline and save money!

With just over a week left until the deadline, register now for great programs, workshops, recruiters and the Expo! The professional development skills you learn in Vegas WON'T stay in Vegas! |
Awards, Awards!
| Your very own Cleveland Pro Chapter has been named one of the nation's top three chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists in the big-city category, we found out this week. We'll be getting an award at the National Convention in Las Vegas Oct. 3-5, at the Tuesday night banquet.
The chapter was given top marks for the "fantastic" Region 4 conference we hosted last spring, in the words of Region 4 Director Jeremy Steele. And for Writer's Week, which Steele called "the best of its kind that I receive" among newsletters.
We are deeply grateful for the honor, which chapter delegate Tony Kozlowski, chief organizer of the April conference, will pick up in Las Vegas on our behalf. Congrats also to immediate past president Cliff Anthony and other board members who worked really hard to pull it off!
That's not the only award we heard about this week. The Ohio SPJ Awards have been announced and we want to name the winners from our area, which includes all of northern Ohio, from Toledo to Youngstown, Akron and Canton. There are in fact so many winners that we'll have to take them in sections, doing the Print winners this week and the Broadcast winners next. For full results, visit the Ohio SPJ Awards website and download a PDF list of winners in the categories of your choice.
There will be a luncheon Oct. 30 at the Ohio State football stadium to honor the recipients. Arrive at 11:30 a.m. at the Huntington Club (Club Room Three) at Ohio Stadium, 411 Woody Hayes Drive
in Columbus, where you'll enjoy "tailgate fare" and get a chance to tour the stadium and facilities -- the Buckeyes won't be there, though. They will be playing an away game at Minnesota.
Tickets are $50 each, $30 for students. For tickets, mail a check
payable to "Ohio SPJ Awards" to Tom Moore, 4337 Chanticleer Drive,
Fairview Park, OH 44126. Ticket orders must be received by October 22nd. (Editor's note: We hope to figure out the online ticket ordering system soon -- it was not working for us at deadline time!)
