This just in - Stephenson to attend Nostalgia Night with personal Cleveland TV memorabilia collection
Alan Stephenson
Alan Stephenson
Alan Stephenson, professor in the Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre Arts at John Carroll University, will be at our Journalism Nostalgia Night Tuesday along with many items from his personal "museum" of early Cleveland TV memorabilia - some of which few besides Stephenson can explain!
One of Cleveland's first public broadcasters, Stephenson actually made the first on-air announcement when WVIZ went on the air in 1965. Stephenson has a treasure-trove of Cleveland journalism memories, stories and photographs. Many of his photos are posted on a special website called North East Ohio TV Memories, put together by Stephenson and others with a passion for local media history. He also oversees the Northeast Ohio Broadcast Archives at John Carroll, a collection of film, audio and video recordings and photos from this region, which are in constant use as requests come in for specific items all the time. He can't bring all these things with him, but he has some fantastic stuff to show you, as do other SPJ Cleveland members.

This event is open to the public, so please share and forward this announcement (use the links below) to friends and colleagues, and bring them out to see the display we have put together, chat about the old times, and enjoy ourselves. Dress appropriately, and bring your own items to share and discuss. You won't be pressured to join SPJ.

We will have a very brief business meeting at the start, when we ask members to elect our new SPJ Cleveland board for the coming year (see below for the nominations). Then we'll get into the fun. A cash bar and munchies will be available. We ask for a $5 donation to help cover expenses.

We'll post others on our website when they are all collected into a brochure, which we hope to have available Tuesday night.

So far she has taught or is scheduled to teach introductory journalism, First Amendment law, political communication, media literacy, editing and design, health & environment reporting. She has been very involved with SPJ for the past three years, serving this past year as Second Vice-President, Membership Chair and Writer's Week editor. Carrie's blog, which is about the "sense of place" -- which she examined in newspapers for her dissertation, is called Dis.location. Her personal webpage is here. President's Column
Cliff Anthony
Cliff Anthony

You might have sensed from last week's Writer's Week that I was eager to don the immediate past president's hat and pass on the baton to the new board. It's true simply because the new board is made up of great talents.
I've worked with a few of them during my 2009-10 term. They are dedicated and hard working volunteers who want to give back to the community.

I had a wonderful ride with their help. We organized exceptional programs. The two-day Region-4 Spring Conference in April tops the list. It attracted more than 160 people from five states.

Another accomplishment was nixing the Ohio Senate Bill 105 that, if passed, would have banned the broadcasting of 911 calls. The list goes on and on.

The incoming President Claudia Taller bubbles with ideas. Claudia was instrumental for many excellent programs. So is the incoming First Vice President Carrie Buchanan. Carrie gave a face-lift to the Writer's Week. In addition to editing the newsletter, she did the thankless, monotonous job of sending mass e-mails week after week.

Our incoming Second Vice President Audrey McCrone exudes enthusiasm. Talk about energy! Audrey is our social media and website whiz kid, so to speak.

Tom Moore, a long-time board member and our secretary-treasurer, handled the cumbersome task of arranging venues, food and taking reservations. Besides, he fielded umpteen telephone calls and e-mails without any fuss.

Needed a panelist? Or a speaker? Stan Bullard, another long-time board member, was ready with his Rolodex.

Betty Clapp, whom I succeeded, tirelessly worked the phones to put together an impressive slate for 2010-11. Betty never hesitated to pinch hit whenever needed.

For major programs such as the regional conference, we could count on Tony Kozlowski. He stepped up to the plate and organized an outstanding conference.

For free legal advice, I relied on Ken Myers. Ken decided to step down from the board because he is running for the Cuyahoga County council.

This is not a farewell column. I'm not going anywhere. Or, should I say: "I ain't going nowhere?"

Let me take this opportunity to thank the board members for their support and team spirit. I wish the new crew all the success and the very best.

Adios.
Sincerely,
Cliff Anthony
