Spring Has Sprung!!

mainstreet It's Here.....

Spring has most certainly sprung.  The weeds are growing like crazy, the grass is turning green, and the ATV's and UTV's are venturing into the streets.   A recent trip up Revenue Gulch revealed a quickly receding snow line.  The Dry Creek falls are certainly not Dry now... It might be worth a trip to see them if you haven't seen them before.   Things in Marysvale are shaping up nicely as the Restaurants, RV Parks and Cabins & Motels are getting ready for the season.   We have also completely rebuilt the Marysvle Website with lots of good information and more to come soon.  With all the precipitation, riding the Paiute Trail should be beautiful this year.   We look forward to seeing you in Marysvale!!

Sincerely,

Darin Bushman

Give Me a Cup of that Coffee.......

Paul Stromberg was a disabled WWII vetran who moved to Marysvale in the 70's, Paul was an avid fisherman, wood and metal craftsman.  Paul made wooden toys for all the local clinics and health departments and is missed by many.  Paul had a small 150lb anvil that he used for his metal work but was always searching for a 500 pounder.  Well as you know, not many folks are making anvils anymore and they are hard to come by, so just for fun Paul decided to make a life size 500 out of wood.   Paul carried it around under one arm for the better part of one summer.   I recall working in the store when Paul had been sitting around the old Pot Belly stove drinking coffee and telling lies.  Paul decided it was time to go and picked up the anvil and walked out of the store.   As luck would have it there was group of bicyclists in the store who had ridden from New Jersey on their way to California.  The leader of the group promptly rounded up his entourage to peer out the window at the 78 year old man carrying a 500lb anvil under one arm.  They all decided they wanted a cup of that coffee and whatever he had in it!!

Spring Flowers on the Paiute Trail

segolilybarrell cactuscactusred

Spring and early summer is an excellent time to ride the south Monroe Mountain- Elbow Ranch Loop near Marysvale in search of wildflowers.  Your early summer excursions may be dampened by the snow across the trails in the high country; the wise Utah excursionist will learn to adapt and take advantage of the particular benefits that each season has to offer.  Spring in the Sevier valley in the heart of the Paiute Trail is no exception;  it has many benefits to offer.

In Spring, there are many trails  open along the foothills beneath the high mountain ranges of the Paiute Trail area.  These trails can lead you through a  continuous studio showcase of natural wildflower art that may be one of your most memorable days in the area if you make the effort.  The season for these valley wildflowers starts in late April through the first part of June.  The end of May seems to be the time when these flowers are at their peak. This is the time I would recommend to see them in the lower elevations.

The Paiute Trail leg between Marysvale and Monroe Mountain has some ideal areas for these seasonal flowers. The bright orange fields of desert globe-mallow just south of the old Elbow Ranch are one of these.  The desert globe-mallow has a small cupped bright orange flower with a bright yellow center and is distantly related to the familiar potted geranium.

Another highlight at this time and place is the Utah State flower, the Sego Lily.  This root of this native species was dug and eaten by the native Paiute bands who frequented these areas in by-gone days. It sports a 3 pedal white tulip-like flower with yellow and red center. The well-known Indian Paintbrush can usually be found together at the same time and place as the Sego Lily.

The cacti blooms come mostly in two basic species.  One small barrel-shaped species comes in clumps and has a blood-red cupped flower with a yellow center.  The Prickly Pear subspecies are of particular interest. There are three main colors that we have been able to identify. The bright pink-red, the yellow and the rare in-between orange blossoms are all to be found here.  Sometimes the different colors appear to be in the same plant but close examination will reveal separate plants growing closely together.  It would be an interesting study  to find out how the different prickly pear colors genetically inter-twine.

The desert primrose with its showy delicate petals can cover acres at a time in certain places along these sage brush corridors and is a must see for the wildflower lover.

There are many other beautiful flowers to be seen on a spring excursions like this;  way too many to highlight. Come see for yourself this spring.

Technology....even in Marysvale!!
old west town

Having been involved in the tourism and lodging business since 1993, it has been very interesting to watch the advent and use of technology by guests that have stayed with us at Moore's Old Pine Innin Marysvale, Utah.  One of the earlier gadgets to hit the market was cell phones. It has been interesting to watch our guests walk around the property where you could hear their conversation and the words "Can you hear me now?" and walk a little further again and say "Can you hear me now?" The years have brought us many new phones with more and more apps and capabilities and reception has improved dramatically but on occasion you still hear "Can you hear me now?"

Digital cameras have been another tool that have gained in popularity.  True, people have always had regular cameras for as long as I have been around but so many more people have turned into semi professional photographers with the digital cameras and home computer photography software.  This Marysvale Newspaper and the pictures within are obvious beneficiaries of the digital age.

One of the more recent electronic tools that is gaining in popularity for tourists is the GPS.  For a number of years some of our guests were showing up with various GPS units and had homemade brackets to mount  their GPS to their ATV's.  When I saw the first Garmin ETrex GPS that had topography software loaded on it where I could see trails, springs, mines, land features, etc I knew at that very moment that would be something I had to have.  Fortunately, my birthday was right around the corner and my wife fulfilled my dreams and to this date I still use that GPS on the Paiute Trail system most every time I go for a ride.

Marysvale and the Paiute Trail system is a wonderful place to gain confidence and know how with your GPS.  If you have not been involved in the world of "Geocaching" you need to make it a point to do so!  Geocaching is a treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online.  The Marysvale area has hundreds of Geocach's located within the area and accessible from your ATV.  You can find these Geocach's at www.geocach.com.

Since Marysvale is founded by miners and is home to hundreds of old mining areas, another great website to visit is Mindat.org  This website gives hundreds of mines in the area and if you take some time to learn how to navigate the site you will be able to get GPS coordinates and use your GPS to go out and have a real historical adventure!  Have fun and we hope to see you poking around Marysvale with that camera around your neck, your GPS in hand and your phone to your ear saying "Can you find me now?"
