All the more reason for DFC-Niko to launch coverage of 10 emerging game markets in 2010. The growth in emerging markets for games should be fun to watch, and perhaps there will be a leap frog effect that bypasses one or more of the existing platforms in the developed worlds (though much of that is dependent on a country's regulatory structure for games). As a reminder, the countries DFC-Niko covers are: Brazil, Mexico, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The reports on each country will be published in August so place your orders now.
Just think about the growth potential in the US market, if the data released in a recent report from Newzoo is accurate! Only 9% of game spending in the US is attributed to online games. In China it is closer to 95%. Imagine what might happen to market growth if China opened up to consoles and the US embraces online games in the same manner as Asian countries. Sure, the console game publishers will need to adjust their strategies, but it is a fascinating time to watch the market. A recent news item said that console game sales fell drastically in April (in the US), and that they are down for the year.
Niko has observed that the tween game market in China is growing, especially thanks to the "green game" policies promulgated by the government and the recognition by the online game operators that not all revenue can come from hard core males aged 18-24 who play MMORPGs.
