 Diabetes Camps
........ is this the year?

 Kids at Camp
Diabetes camps are special. The children get to experience camp with other children who are living with Type I diabetes.

It's hard to leave your child, I know. But importantly, camp puts your child on the road to independence - a stepping stone for them...
and you!

There are many camps in the region that are put together by the American Diabetes Association. These include day camps for children 4-9, and overnight camps for children 9 and older. The ADA website explains everything you need to know.

Cups For Camp

 - a fundraising program for Type I diabetes camps

It's no secret that camps are expensive. Day camps cost $275, and overnight camps cost $450 to $795.

But these camps are special!

The kids learn, share life experiences, understand they are not alone, and have fun just like any other kid!

And by the way .....it could give you the first real break you've had since diagnosis (probably years). Been there.

All children who want to attend camp should have the opportunity to do so!

In a world where fundraisers exist for sports, hobbies, and other extracurricular activites, who wouldn't purchase a $10 coffee cup to help send your kid to a special diabetes camp?

Its Not Too Late!

Diabetes Fair

On March 5th, the Diabetes Clinic at Hope Children's Hospital put on a diabetes fair for the community.

The hall was filled with exhibitors from diabetes companies, and families had the opportunity to see their products and ask them questions.

In the auditorium, Dr. Farah Khatoon introduced herself as Hope's new Pediatric Endocrinologist, and Dr, Gabrielle Roberts gave an informative lecture on identifying and addressing behavioral concerns.

Other topics presented included ADA Camps and Slam Dunk Basketball Camp.

COMMIT-TED Bus Trip To a Diabetes Camp
ADA Camp John Warvel

COMMIT-TED Bus Trip to Diabetes Camp

Its no secret that I support diabetes camps. It just surprises me though, on just how few families send their child.

I believe that one of the barriers to participating in camp, is fear of the unknown.

I want to take that fear away!

Would you like to see a diabetes camp? No Pressure, No Obligation, And it's Free! Let's take an old-fashioned bus trip!

If enough families are interested, COMMIT-TED will sponsor a bus trip to an ADA Camp Open House, at Camp John Warvel, in North Webster, Indiana.

9:00  Bus Leaves South Suburbs
12:00 Arrive at Camp, tour the grounds and facilities, eat lunch
2:30  Depart Camp
5:00 Arrive Home

Camp John Warvel is located about 130 miles from Chicago's South Suburbs. It is operated by the American Diabetes Association, and is one of the area's most affordable options for summer diabetes camp. The ADA will be on site to answer any questions you may have.

Realistically, by May 1st, it is probably too late to attend this particular camp this summer - as it starts in early June. But the point of this trip would be to give you and your child an idea of what camp is really like - to take that fear of the unknown away -for some future time.
