LINE-UP FOR THE 29th ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PARADE IS SET! SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, 2009

 
 
The 29th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade is ready to make its annual appearance touring the streets of San Diego's East Village on Saturday, January 17th beginning at 10.00am.The Parade will circle the boundaries of Petco park, it proceeds north on Park Boulevard, left (west) on "J" street again left (south) on 7th Avenue at Tony Gwynn Way to Park Blvd, right on Imperial Avenue back to "Tailgate Park" (13th and Imperial streets)
 
The Grand Marshall for this year's edition is Superior Court Judge, Napoleon A. Jones, Jr., ret., and as usual there are several divisional marshals' culled from all sectors of the San Diego community-civic, political, educational and athletic. The Parade is sponsored and coordinated by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter-as it has since the Parade's inception in San Diego.

Daddy Diaries is a one-night only special workshop performance
by author/writer and native San Diegan RICK NAJERATuesday, January 27, 7pm
in the Lyceum Space

Local favorite RICK NAJERA presents his one man comedy which explores his life as a father of three young children from Najera's uniquely eccentric comedic point of view. DADDY DIARIES is written and performed by Najera and directed by GARY BLUMSACK. "A new play from Rick Najera is always of immediate interest to San Diego REP. We are thrilled to once again host Najera's unique comic talent on our stage," said San Diego REP Artisic Director SAM WOODHOUSE.

San Diego REP has previously hosted four original productions by Najera:
A Quiet Love, Latins Anonymous, Latinologues and Sweet 15 Quincea�era. Rick Najera, an award-winning writer/actor/director/producer, is one of the most produced Latino playwright s in the country. His nationally recognized play Latinologues ran on Broadway for 137 performances, a historical achievement for a Latino-oriented show. Najera has been honored twice by Hispanic Magazine as "100 Most Influential Latinos in America" and is currently Executive Vice President of Development for MioTV and co-creator of KartoonTV.com. His writing credits include comedies such as "MAD TV" and "In Living Color." Najera is also the co-writer of the feature film, "Nothing Like the Holidays" starring John Leguizamo, Debra Messing and Freddy Rodriguez currently playing nationwide.

2009 Heritage Day Parade Now Accepting Applications 

Get ready Southern California! The Heritage Day Festival and Parade is now accepting parade entry and vendor applications for this year's themed event: "Your Bridge to Change"

The parade will take place on Saturday, February 28, 2009. The Parade committee is looking for culturally diverse entries and floats, as well as local and national groups, organizations and clubs, marching bands, dance and step teams. Celebrating its 18th year the Heritage Marketplace will feature a "world fair" of booths and host a bouquet of attractions including special celebrity guest appearances, live bands, free children's activities, educational and health resources, and multicultural food booths from around the World.

Parade entry fees are $100 and vendor booth applications start at $150. There are also limited sponsorships available for school marching bands for a limited time. For more information visit our website at www.heritagedayparade.org or call our office at 619.262.0334.

If you were thinking of signing up to volunteer at the Buick Invitational Golf Tournament at the beautiful Torrey Pines Golf Course but haven't got around to it, there are still volunteer spots available!

Volunteers will receive a free parking pass, free meal and beverage tickets on the day of service and a free ticket to attend the tournament on another day. In addition, the Lodge at Torrey Pines and the Century Club have generously offered to donate funds to VSD for every hour served by volunteers at this highly anticipated event.
