Keren Or E-Newsletter

Israel recently marked its 63rd birthday, an event which is celebrated in Israel and in Jewish communities around the world. In Israel the celebration is not spontaneous, but a transition from Yom HaZikaron (Israel's Remembrance Day) when those who have fallen to protect the country are remembered. As day turns to night, commemoration and reflection turn to celebration of Yom Ha'atzmaut, the Day of Independence. Consider the incredible strides Israel has made in 63 years and the remarkable institutions that populate it, such as Keren Or, the only center for blind, multi-disabled children in Israel. Help us honor Israel's Independence by making a gift to Keren Or today.

Mitzvah Day at Temple Israel
|
As part of Keren Or's initiative to create a Tactile Library, the community service committee of Temple Israel of New York City chose to make tactile books as part of its Mitzvah Day on April 10. These books are useful for the students at Keren Or because, without the benefit of sight, they rely on their other senses to learn about the world around them. By adding a layer of textured materials to Israeli children's books, members of Temple Israel were able to produce something that the children will be able to experience through their sense of touch. Volunteers, both children and their parents, worked together to assemble a number of books that will be re-bound and sent back to Keren Or in Jerusalem for use in the classroom. As more of these books are created, we come closer to the goal of having one book for each student, allowing them to participate fully in the lesson. If you would like to carry out this project with your synagogue, community center, school or for your own Bar or Bat Mitzvah, please contact Avi Smolen at 212-279-4070 or avi@keren-or.org. |

Yom Ha'atzmaut Celebration
|
Keren Or Young Leadership, in partnership with Dor Chadash, commemorated Israel's fallen soldiers and celebrated its independence at B.B. King's in Times Square on Monday, May 9. An annual event with over 100 co-sponsors, this is the largest celebration outside of Israel! The commemoration was highlighted by remarks from New York City Council Speaker, Christine Quinn, and Consul General for Israel in New York, Ido Aharoni, who spoke about their experiences and the importance of a strong commitment to Israel. The event transitioned to celebration with drinks, dancing, and a raffle drawing for various prizes, including a free trip to Israel on El Al. There were over 1,000 people in attendance, performances by Blue Nitrous, DJ Moshe Bonen/Maydalleh and a special appearance by Y-Love and Diwon, presented by Shemspeed. |
