Chanukah is also known as the Festival of Lights, a holiday with special meaning for Keren Or, because our name means Ray of Light. The goal of our Center is to bring light into the lives of our students, and you can be a part of that this year. Instead of giving a conventional gift on the 8th Night of Chanukah, your $36 donation will provide new educational toys for our students, allowing them to grow and mature. You can make a donation for yourself, or in honor of a friend or loved one. To share the warmth of the Chanukah candles with our students, please click here to donate.

One of the greatest benefits of volunteering at Keren Or are the smiles on the faces of our students. Keren Or is lucky to host a number of Bnot Sherut, young Israeli women who work at Keren Or as part of their national civil service (pictured here). They take an active part in continuing the therapy and education of our students and young adults twenty four hours-a-day, especially by spending time building relationships with them. We thank the Bnot Sherut for their continued service and for making the lives of the children and young adults at Keren Or that much brighter.

Temple Emanu-El Mitzvah Day
|

| | Jodi Isman and her daughter, Maddy, assemble a tactile board |
|
One way that Keren Or involves synagogues in our work is to participate in Mitzvah Days. Recently, Temple Emanu-El in New York City held their annual Mitzvah Day, which allowed children and adults of all ages to learn about different charitable organizations and to do something for them.
There was a table for Keren Or where attendees could make tactile boards, special learning surfaces that can be custom-made with objects and toys of different sizes and textures. Keren Or students cannot rely on their eyes, so they use their sense of touch to "see" the different types of objects on the board. At Temple Emanu-El, kitchen racks and simple plastic toys were available that older children and adults could assemble into boards. Younger children could decorate stress balls and bean bags for the students.
Many Hebrew School students and their families participated, and the adults became just as involved as the children in making the tactile boards! After the tactile boards were put together, they were immediately boxed, labeled, and sent to Jerusalem to be used at Keren Or. We are so grateful to all the congregants of Temple Emanu-El who made Mitzvah Day such a success. It was truly impressive how the event engaged people of all ages, and especially children, in the true meaning of mitzvah.
If you would like to organize a Mitzvah Day at your synagogue and would like to include Keren Or, please contact Avi Smolen at avi@keren-or.org. |

We can only succeed in advancing programs for our students' special needs with your involvement and support. If you are in Jerusalem to visit family for Chanukah or winter vacation, we invite you to take a tour of our state-of-the-art facility so that you can see first-hand the amazing work of our staff and the smiles on the faces of our students. We also encourage you to share your experiences with your home communities, so that they too can understand the importance of caring for these children. If you are interested, please call in Israel 073.240.0201 and we would be more than happy to arrange transportation and a short tour of the facilities. |
