Mad Dogs and Englishmen

Tea Room Logo
Swimming with the Dogs A note from Jo:

Is it ever going to cool down?  There's a saying where I come from that only "mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun."

Well, I'd welcome a few Englishmen at the Tea Room right now and we'd even cater for the occasional mad dog or two. Where is everybody? The heat is oppressive and I want to be back in rainy old London.

Kids are back at school, summer's nearly over and it's still over 100 degrees in the shade.  Me and my mad dogs are spending all our time in the pool. Dee Dee is getting particularly adept at dive-bombing Tia.

It's just "too darn hot." Well, I've decided I'm not putting up with it. So, we are having a September Sale Extravaganza at the Tea Room with savings of 20% off ALL merchandise for the whole month of September.

So climb into that lovely air-conditioned car and come up to Carefree for the day, try one of our award winning scones and shop in our gift store for a bargain.

Oh, by the way, it is official! The English Rose Tea Room was just awarded Best Afternoon Tea in Phoenix Magazine's annual Best of the Valley issue!

Regards,
Jo

GRANDMA ROSE
SPACING OUT!

Grandpa George

After much correspondence from the missing Grandma that sits outside the English Rose Tea Room, things have really started to "space out" for this delinquent senior. Last week, Grandpa George suggested that his wife was just a floozy in a flowery hat, hanging out with undesirables in Vegas, then the Tea Room received this latest email:

To: English Rose Tea Room
From: Grandma Rose
Ground Control to English Rose Tea Room, this is Grandma Rose

After hurtful insinuations from Grandpa George that I am not acting my age and should stop behaving like a 'floozy,' I have decided to do something to make my country proud. Alfonso, my recent dance partner, wasn't much help in the"moon-walking" compulsory dance routine, so I've decided to join the NASA space program!

There are SO many advantages to spending the day weightless, just wait till you see my triple back-flip maneuver! Grandpa George needs to live it up a little. Life is too short, so for goodness sake get out there and enjoy it. And tell him the dog IS NOT on a hunger strike, that canny canine will do anything for peanut butter.

Beam me up Scotty! Dancing IN the stars dears!
Love,
Grandma Rose xx

Introducing our new Cranberry Autumn Tea
Cranberry Autumn TeaIn the States we think of cranberries when we think of the fall season.  So I am delighted to be able to offer my Tea Room customers our new Cranberry Autumn Tea.

Available in 4oz. tins, the loose leaf tea is wonderful hot or iced and tastes of all those yummy spices and fruits that remind us of falling leaves, log fires, long walks in the woods, chilly weather. Yes, I know, I'm fixating about the heat again.

Anyway, this fabulous tea is now on the menu and available in the Tea Room for purchase. We love it.

Welcoming the Fall

Blackberry and Apple Crumble
Apple Blackberry Crumble
Where I come from, we call this time of year autumn.  As kids we hated September as it meant going back to school, that feeling of impending doom on a Sunday night as you thought about school in the morning. Urrgh!

I can still conjure up that feeling even now. In fact, in my family, if we ever get butterflies about something we call it (in an ominous voice) that "back to school" feeling. I'm sure you've all experienced it.

As a child, there were some really GREAT things about September, one of them was blackberry picking with my Grandparents. Mum, Dad and us three kids would bundle into the car, dressed in our Wellington boots and with plastic bags in hand, off we'd drive to Tweezledown Racecourse accompanied by Nan and Grandad in their Vauxhall Viva.

Grandad always got the best berries as he stood over six feet tall and could reach the biggest, juiciest fruit. Us kids on the other hand, who were a might bit shorter, had strict instructions, "don't pick the ones lower down, that's where the dog's just pee-ed."

Once back at Nan's house she would make us a delicious blackberry and apple crumble for pudding (dessert) with lashings of thick custard and cream.

Here's Nan's recipe for Blackberry & Apple Crumble:
· 1/2 pound (1-3/4 cups) blackberries (picked from the hedgerow, but not the ones lower down)
· 1 pound (3 or 4 medium) Granny Smith apples (windfalls will do)
· 6 ounces (3/4 cup) all-purpose flour
· 4 ounces (1/2 cup packed) soft brown sugar
· 4 ounces (1/2 cup) butter

Wash and hull blackberries and soak overnight in cold water...(to drown any maggots...seriously!) Peel, core and thickly slice apples. Rub together flour and butter and stir in sugar (or put all dry ingredients in the food processor and whiz around till it all looks like coarse sand). Butter shallow casserole dish and layer blackberries and apples and a sprinkle of sugar. Top with the crumble topping and bake in 180 degrees centigrade/Gas mark 4/5 oven (350 degrees F.) for 30 to 40 minutes until top is lightly browned and crisp and fruit is soft. Serve with fresh cream and lots of custard.

Meet Janice Roper,
our resident Tea Leaf Reader

Janice Roper

Why not start out the fall season in a positive way
with a personal reading from our acclaimed tea leaf reader?

"When I had my tea-leaf reading in March, Janice told me that I would have a granddaughter at Christmastime. My husband and I have waited a long time for grandchildren, so I was thrilled, shocked, amazed, etc., when she gave me that news.  Needless to say, I didn't tell anyone for fear it would 'break the spell.'  Towards the end of April our son and daughter-in-law sent us an e-mail of a pregnancy reading positive!  So I  gave them the news that they would be having a girl at Christmastime!  As time progressed Carrie's ultrasounds couldn't conclusively say it was a girl, (during the last one she had her legs crossed)!  Today Carrie called to say the latest ultrasound confirmed that Janice was correct, a baby girl due Dec. 26!  Does that not blow your mind? Has anyone else talked to you about your predictions coming true?"
Well, what are you waiting for?
Come and learn what your tea leaves say about you!

Janice Roper reads tea leaves at the Tea Room every Monday and Thursday. She is also available on Saturdays by appointment. For your reservation, call 480-488-4812.

"Iced tea may not have as much wisdom as hot tea,
but in the summer better a cool and refreshed dullard than a steamy sweat-drenched sage - leave sagacity to the autumn!"
