Possibilities for Riley!
Riley growing up

It was a difficult time for Kim and Jeffrey Hoben. On vacation at a cottage and connecting with old friends, they were not expecting the birth of their daughter, Riley to take place. But after a few minutes, it was clear that it was happening now. With no hospital within several miles, Jeffrey had the honour of delivering the breeched Riley himself and then all they could do was get the neighbours' help while awaiting the ambulance.

For Kim and Jeffrey, the situation quickly worsened when they were told that Riley had suffered two strokes - one before, and one after her birth. Even more troubling, the strokes had affected both sides of little Riley's brain. They told Kim that Riley would never walk, talk, hear or see. "We were referred to Grandview right out of the hospital," says Kim.

Like the over 1200 families currently waiting to access services at Grandview, Riley was placed on a wait list. Now months later, working with her therapy team has resulted in marked improvement for Riley.

"At the beginning, Riley couldn't move her head from side to side. This changed with therapy and that is when we knew that Riley would be helped by Grandview," says Kim.

Now at age 2, Riley is able to take small steps holding onto something, speaks a few words and is getting better each day. "We are very happy with her progress so far. She continues to amaze us daily," say both Kim and Jeffrey.

Riley even interacts with big brother Liam, and the family is overjoyed. "I couldn't imagine going through this without the help of Grandview. If I didn't have them I don't know what we would do."

As the population grows in Durham Region, so does the number of kids like Riley, who need help at Grandview. Kim is confident that her daughter Riley will greatly benefit from all the help she is currently receiving from Grandview and that for Riley the future is bright. "You don't know how important these services are until your family actually needs them," Kim says. "Grandview has opened up a whole new world for us."

St. Marys helps build the future for children with special needs
While many children were having fun this summer, those who attended the therapeutic camps offered by Grandview were able to build on their successes while having fun, because of the support of St. Marys Cement.

The Foundation is grateful for St. Marys' support of the school age camps. Therapy goals are reinforced through social interaction and activities designed to engage children with a variety of special needs.

Revving up support for Our Kids

The engines were revved up for Grandview Kids again this year as the Autofest group continued to make a huge difference to Our Kids through their contributions. The Autofest event, hosted by the Motor City Car Club, North Oshawa Lions Club and Oshawa West Lions Club, has raised more than $120,000 since 2002 in support of Grandview Kids.

"I don't know where we would be without Grandview," said Vickie, while sharing her son Owen's story. Owen, a Grandview client with cerebral palsy is undaunted by his challenges and has the smile to prove it. "Owen has gained so much because of Grandview and he is now very happy in his own skin," added Vickie.

"In this time of constrained government funding, the community and the Autofest group in particular has really shown determination to help the over 1200 children with special needs and disabilities waiting to access critical therapy services," said Vicky Earle, Executive Director of the Foundation.

Swinging Success this Summer

Jonathan and his mom, Catherine.

The event kicked off with an inspirational introduction from 14-year-old Jonathan Picard-Bourdeau, a Grandview youth living with cerebral palsy, detailing the importance of the support Grandview offers and how the services have helped him and countless others over the years.

"I want to give back to Grandview and help other kids have the opportunity that I have. It's not easy being me, but with Grandview I can achieve my independence," said Jonathan Picard-Bourdeau, "Grandview has shown me that I don't have to be limited by my challenges, and I want other kids to know that they shouldn't limit themselves either. Grandview has taught me that."

The 16th annual Golf Fore Grandview was a great success raising close to $50,000 for Our Kids.
TD giving children fun and gains

This summer was fun for the many preschoolers who were able to attend the preschool therapeutic camps offered by Grandview because of the support of TD.   It was also a summer of gains.

Grandview's therapeutic recreation camps have proven their popularity and success with children and their families.

We believe that meaningful recreation programs are critical to the well-being of children with special needs, who can get the specialized care that they may need.
