Thanks to Play & Learn for getting blue for Grandview Kids.  Falling just shy of the world record, nonetheless lots of people got blue and dressed as smurfs to create awareness about Grandview. The best part is that we had fun doing it.

Congrats to Lisa and the Kev's Gift to Grandview Fundraiser. Our Ironman, Lisa demonstrated not only physical strength but tenacity and strength of character.

Grandview Kids dream big!

Always ready with a smile and eager to learn, Steven Cooper,  a Grandview client and student at Courtice Secondary School is demonstrating how Grandview Kids are truly included.

Described as an enthusiastic, eager and kind-hearted young man, it's not surprising that his  recent co-op placement with Campbell Children's School at Grandview was a huge success for Steven, the staff and students alike.

His five month placement (February-June) consisted of spending half days at Campbell's where he learnt about students with special needs, their programs and the roles and responsibilities of the staff. Having been a long time client at Grandview, Steven was very familiar and comfortable with the building, programs and staff. This knowledge allowed Steven insight so that he was able to support the young students to be successful at the Centre and the School.

Steven, a little nervous at first, became not only more confident and willing to try new things, but also led activities and helped maintain routines in the classroom.  He also demonstrated flexibility in the face of change.

Welcoming the many opportunities to work directly with the students, Steven has learned many new skills himself. His encouraging and patient manner, along with his great sense of humour, enabled him to build positive relationships with the staff and students very easily.

Not only did Steven develop his problem solving and interpersonal skills, he practiced taking initiative and being responsible - all while having a ton of fun!

"Concrete" support for Grandview Kids
Thanks to our friends at Dufferin Concrete, a new concrete truck will be spreading the Grandview name around the Durham Region as of July 1. Keep an eye out for the truck...

Kids helping Kids
Just recently, students from three schools have raised funds to help children with special needs and disabilities.
Vicky accepting a cheque from William Dunbar Public School's Principal Tony Rizzuto and a student.

It was a pleasure to visit both North Courtice Public School and William Dunbar Public School, to accept the cheques. I was also presented with a cheque from Valley Farm Public School when I was at William Dunbar.

The students raised about $1,200.  I am touched by the students' compassion for their peers and their desire to help.

These students will surely grow into community-minded, responsible adults and Durham Region will be all the better for their living and working here. I think that we should also recognize the school staff and the parents who are helping to support the development of philanthropists!

I not only appreciate the contribution the students have made to our Foundation, but am inspired and encouraged by the fact that they want to help their friends and neighbours in Durham and to make a difference.

Celebrating Ryan's smile
Wanting a way to honor her brother and help children with special needs at the same time, Jillian launched the Ryan's Smile bracelet project.  Attached to the bracelet is a smile bead that represents the captivating smile that Ryan gives so easily.  Proceeds from the sale of these braclets  will help Grandview kids.  Thanks Jillian, Ryan, Kelly and Mark.
Vicky accepts the cheque from Jillian and Kelly.
