UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Lindsay Moir - will be joining us again this year on Saturday, Nov. 5th.  The focus of the presentation this year will be on "Problem Solving at School", and will include a wealth of valuable information, focusing on physical diagnoses.  Some of the issues to be discussed include the pro's & con's of IEPs/Labelling, what information is shared, school streaming, ME class placements, home schooling/home programming; and much more! Our target audience for this program are families that have already been involved with the school system.

Celebrating ME! - will be a 5 week group for children with disabilities between the ages of 9-12 years.  It will be held on Tuesdays - November 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29th from 6:30 - 8pm.  This fun-filled group is designed to promote healthy self-esteem, along with strategies to handle some of life's challenges.  Through-out this group, the kids will identify and celebrate their many strengths and qualities.

Stepping Stones to School - this is a 4-week program for families who have not yet started school or have just started school this year.  It will take place on Wednesdays - February 15, 22, 29 & March 7th from 6:30 - 8:30pm.  Stepping Stones has been designed to provide families of kids with disability the information they need for school, including IEPs & IPRCs, building relationships with the school, and building vision & values for their child.  It includes speakers from the various school boards and community partners involved in the school, as well as a panel of parents who have been through this before.

ADDITIONAL AUTISM SERVICES AND SUPPORTS FOR DURHAM CHILDREN

The Durham Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) based Services has gotten off to a tremendous start.

Launched August 4, the program has already seen close to 600 families making enquiries and over 430 names sent to the Central Waitlist.

"This is an exciting time for Grandview Children's Centre, as we are able to play an integral role in children and youth with autism now having access to additional services in the region.  We have commenced service with the first group as of October 24," says Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann, Executive Director Grandview Children's Centre.

This means that hundreds of children and youth in the Durham region with Autism will now have access to additional services and supports. Grandview Children's Centre was selected as the lead agency for this

initiative and has partnered with Lake Ridge Community Support Services and Resources for Exceptional Children and Youth - Durham Region for the delivery of these services and supports, and University of Ontario Institute of Technology for evaluation purposes.

Available to children and youth from birth to 17 years of age (up to their 18th birthday) with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and

their families,  the ABA program will be offered to target a child's highest area of priority over a two to six month period, typically two to four hours per week.

In Durham Region, Grandview Children's Centre will accept referrals from parents/caregivers as well as a health professional. Persons interested in applying for this program, please contact the ABA Intake line at Grandview Children's Centre: 905.728.1673 Ext. 2248 or 1.800.304.6180 Ext. 2248.

Holiday Help Our Kids Campaign

Grandview Children's Foundation has launched our Holiday Help Our Kids Campaign!

Our goal is to raise $200,000 by December 25, 2011 - with a lot of help from our many kind friends throughout Durham Region. We are off to a great start - thanks to Grandview families, staff and friends who participated in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Charity Marathon on October 16 - we raised about $23,000!!

Also, the Bagwaating Community Association presented a cheque to the Foundation for $25,000 during its Family Day event on October 22. We are truly grateful for this kind and generous support.

So we are already about 24% of the way towards realizing our goal.

We want to truly make a difference for as many children as possible - Grandview Children's Centre has over 1,000 children with special needs and disabilities on the wait list!

Currently the Centre has funds to serve 4,500 children each year - but it's not enough.

You can help - through your support of Grandview Children's Foundation and by forwarding this e-news to your family, friends and colleagues and urging them to contribute to Grandview's Holiday Help Our Kids Campaign!

On behalf of Andrew, Danielle, Ryan and Timothy (our inspirational ambassadors) - thank you!

Vicky Earle

Executive Director

Walking and Running to Change Lives

Inspiration at its best!

Over 73 walkers, wheelers and riders - clients, families and staff put on their runnning shoes (and pumpkin hats!), braved the weather and took to the streets of Toronto to raise awareness and funds for   Grandview kids!

While the fundraising support was phenomenal, the real story was the inspiration and hope that these walkers created in others.  Children with special needs were not inhibited by their personal circumstances and made a difference to those children still waiting to access services at Grandview.

Thanks Team Grandview, Smash'n Pumpkins who made a smash'n difference to OUR KIDS!

Autofest helps Grandview Kids

"Positively beaming" would have been the perfect way to describe the kids who were happy to receive the cheque presented to Grandview from the Autofest group - Motor City Car Club and the North Oshawa Lion's Club for the recent Autofest show.

This means we are one step closer to reducing the growing waitlist at Grandview.

Your support giving Our Kids a dream

Andrew and Ryan both could not help but have a great time as they got their faces painted and had funny balloon animals made for them at the Bagwaating Family Day.

It was their stories of hope and of how Grandview has changed their lives that made the day great for the Bagwaating Community Association.

Our Kids were given a chance to dream, succeed and belong with their  recent presentation to Grandview Children's Foundation.

Timothy was happy to be back at a golf club. Seems he can't get enough of the golf cart! His Grandview story touched all who heard it at the annual golf tournament hosted by Veridian where Our Kids were again top of mind.
