Aloha! Check Out Our Islam in China Resources in this Week's Issue!

China's Muslims are predominantly Turkic peoples living in the vast Xinjiang region of
northwest China. The rest are mainly Hui - either descendants of Chinese
converts to Islam or the offspring of intermarriages with Muslim
immigrants. They live in sizable
communities in the former Silk Road oases of western and central China, in the
southern province of Yunnan, and in the industrial cities and ports of the east (Saudi Aramco World, 2008). It is estimated that they account for 1.6% (about 22 million) of China's population,
and about 1.4% of the world's 1.5 billion Muslims (Pew Forum,
2009).
Accordingly, Islam is
very much alive for these Chinese Muslims who have persevered in their faith, sometimes against great odds, since the seventh
century. Learn more about them in our featured publications and other
resources.
UH Muslim
Societies in Asia & the Pacific cited for innovative intercultural education
The Muslim Societies of Asia and the Pacific (MSAP) has been cited
for innovative intercultural education and engagement in U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's speech
at the Council of Foreign Relations meeting held at the George Washington
University last 26 May:
"We are encouraging our national resource centers to
strengthen ties with partner institutions in areas of the world with
substantial Muslim populations. We will support and help build on innovative
education efforts like the University of Hawaii's Muslim Societies in Asia and
the Pacific Program."
He further adds that the DOE
is committed to supporting such efforts:
"These examples suggest the
great diversity of our current efforts and the equally great potential for
expansion. Such collaboration can
inform and strengthen our reform efforts nationally, even as it helps improve
standards of learning and teaching and fosters understanding internationally." For
the full transcript, go to: "International
Competitiveness in Education" at http://www.cfr.org/publication/22231/
The faculty and staff of MSAP thank Secretary Duncan for his vote of
confidence!
