A Personal Message
From Dr. Ara Elmajian   Dr. Ara Elmajian

Dear Friends

It's that time again to put away the skis, dust off the golf clubs and tennis rackets and start enjoying the activities of summer.

June is also a great month to do a cleanse. Cleansing helps the body eliminate toxins and is a great way to shed a few of those unwanted pounds. Read more on detoxification on our website and in our January 09 newsletter.

In our spring newsletter "biofilm" was the main topic of discussion. Since then we've had an increasing number of patients requesting the Micro-Ident test to identify whether harmful biofilm organisms exist in their mouths. We've also had success testing for those nasty bugs and treating them in patients who've had long standing periodontal problems, not responsive to the regular preventive oral hygiene protocols.  As these bugs can eventually migrate to other parts of the body and have the potential to cause very serious disease it is exciting to already be seeing the benefits of performing these simple tests. Read more information on biofilm in our Spring 2010 newsletter.

For a variety of interesting topics on health and natural medicine please check out Dr.
Melanie MacIver's new blog!!

Also featured in this month's newsletter is an article on prolotherapy. Prolotherapy can be used to treat a plethora of conditions causing musculoskeletal pain with a high success rate. If you suffer from pain, particularly joint pain, call the clinic to book your prolotherapy consultation with myself or Dr.Saul Pilar .

Finally, please help us in welcoming Dr. Sharry Suh to our dental team. Read more about Dr. Suh below.

Have a great summer

Preventing Periodontal Disease - Dr. Melanie MacIver

         Practice good oral hygiene
Remove mercury amalgams, especially if you have other gold fillings
Decrease systemic inflammation by addressing food allergies or other sources of inflammation
Eat a balanced diet with adequate protein, good fats, and veggies
Manage stress with exercise, yoga, breathing or whatever works for you.  Try some calming herbs if you need something stronger.
Consider testing for vitamin and mineral deficiencies

If your dentist is still finding periodontal disease, we recommend:

Using our healing gum rinse and the magic gum solution

(see below)

Our Micro-Ident test to identify the offending bacteria

Taking the appropriate antibiotics to treat them

Taking a probiotic during and after the antibiotics

Magic Gum Solution

1 tsp sea salt and cup baking soda in a small covered container. Wet your toothbrush with 3% hydrogen peroxide (from the drug store) and dip generously into the salt soda mix, and brush whole mouth.  One dip, once a day. Some initial irritation may occur due to the peroxide. If that is the case then just use every few days until this subsides.

Balance Your Hormones - Dr. Melanie MacIver

If you are wondering what is happening with your hormones, now there is one great test for you.  Our 24 hour urine hormone test measures every hormone, including hormone metabolites, and is the gold standard for hormone testing.

As well as your full hormonal profile, you will learn the downstream effects of any prescribed hormone replacement therapy. DHEA, for example, an important hormone often supplemented, is also a precursor for estrogen and testosterone.

There are milder 'good' estrogens, and potentially harmful 'bad' estrogen metabolites, so it is important to know what is happening to your hormones.  It is recommended after taking DHEA or other hormone replacement therapy for several months to make sure your hormones are staying in the safer ranges.

This test is also indicated for anyone who would like to begin a herbal or bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

Guided Imagery to Lighten Your Load - Dr. Jennie Weisenburger

Dumpster Technique

This is a quick imagery that is easy to squeeze in sometime during your day, even on a busy day when it would serve you well to lighten the load and give yourself a little break.

I learned this from a professor during my Naturopathic training, and can say from the experience of a stressed out student, it was beneficial.  The goal of this guided imagery is to get rid of repetitive thoughts or events that are no longer serving you, the data that blocks and overloads your system.

Let's get started.

Sit in a comfortable upright position.

Take a moment to watch your breath and settle in.

Close your eyes

Imagine a dumpster...what color is it, how big is it, is it on wheels?  Without paying particular attention to what is being transferred to the dumpster, imagine files, pictures, letters...whatever comes to you and that you can picture in your mind, flowing into that dumpster.  Let it all go. You can imagine this information coming out of your ear or the side of your head -  whatever visualization works for you.

Information that is important and pertinent will not be lost, and issues will seem clearer once you have completed this exercise. When the dumpster gets full, take it away and bring a new empty one in.  Continue until the information seems to stop flowing or even for a just few minutes.

Enjoy the rest of your day with a clear and focused mind.

Prolotherapy - Effective Treatment for Chronic Pain

Prolotherapy is a nonsurgical and very specific approach to treating chronic pain due to ligament and tendon (joint) injury or instability. In many cases it can completely resolve the problem and eliminate the need for frequent and continuous anti-inflammatory medication and extreme steps such as surgery.

Due to their elastic nature both ligaments and tendons are prone to injury, weakness and overstretching which can cause pain. Lack of blood supply to these already traumatized tissues can prevent complete healing following injury resulting in chronic weakness, laxity and pain in the area.

The most common reason for treatment with prolotherapy is chronic pain that doesn't go away.

It can be used to treat many different conditions such as arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, dislocations, headaches, heel spurs, hip degeneration, fibromyalgia, knee injuries, osteoporosis, plantar faciitis, rotator cuff tears, sacroiliac sprain, sciatica, scoliosis, spinal defects, tennis elbow, TMJ dysfunction and whiplash injuries to name a few.

Prolotherapy provokes affected ligaments and tendons to heal themselves. A combination of procaine (local anesthetic) and dextrose (sugar water) solution is injected into the tissue where it attaches to the bone. This induces localized inflammation which increases blood supply to the area and promotes healing by stimulating the actual growth of new and stronger tissue.

Although the theory of how prolotherapy works is simple the technique requires a well trained and skilled practitioner who has vast experience in this field.

The number of treatments required varies with individual situations but most conditions take between 3 - 6 sessions, usually given at three to six week intervals. Healing begins within just a few hours of the treatment.

Patients treated in our practice with prolotherapy range from adults of all ages and occasionally even children. Olympic athletes, NHL players, amateur athletes, active and sedentary people alike have experienced long term pain relief with this modality of treatment.

If you are interested in finding out if prolotherapy would be an appropriate approach to your situation book an appointment soon with Dr. Saul Pilar or Dr. Ara Elmajian for an evaluation.

Dr. Pilar is a medical school graduate from the University of Toronto and has had extensive prolotherapy training through the Hackett Hemwall Foundation at the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Ara Elmajian is a graduate from the University of Alberta's dental school. He has been trained in prolotherapy through the Hackett Hemwall Foundation at the University of Wisconsin. He has years of experience utilizing prolotherapy to treat the dental and TMJ component.

Herb of the Month
With Dr. Jennie Weisenburger

Nutrient Tea

A nutritive tea that you can drink warm or on ice this summer.  This combination of herbs includes Peppermint leaf, Raspberry leaf, Nettle leaf, Oats and Red Clover flower.  It can be drank by all, young and old, and even if you are pregnant (in your second and third trimester).

The recipe:

Combine equal parts of the dried herbs; peppermint, raspberry leaf, nettles, oats and red clover.

1 tsp - 1 Tbsp of the combined herb mix per cup of boiling water.  You can make a pitcher of this to last a few days. Soak the mixture of herbs and water overnight to extract the minerals from the plants.  Then strain and refrigerate.

Drink two to three cups per day.  If you are pregnant, start at 16 weeks. If you are a new mom, this tea will be supportive for breastfeeding and you could add fennel or fenugreek to enhance breast milk production.

Peppermint leaf:  included for taste as well as its relaxing influence on the gastrointestinal and nervous system.

Red Raspberry leaf:  Rubus ideas leaf is rich in vitamins, minerals and has a tonifying effect on the reproductive tract.  Raspberry leaf contains an alkaloid fragrine which helps the tone of the uterus.  This herb is indicated for use during the second and third trimester of pregnancy to encourage coordinated and effective contractions when it comes time for birthing.

Nettle leaf:  Urtica dioica is a nourishing and tonifying herb, rich in chlorophyll, Vitamins A, C, D and K, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, iron and sulfur.  It is also supportive for the genitourinary tract.

Oats:  Avena sativa is one of my favorite herbs for nervous system support. Avena is a nutritive relaxant with a slight stimulating edge on the motor system and taken over time will increase stamina and strength.  The immediate effect of Avena is one of mild sedation.  Over time, Avena lifts the spirits and is a nourishing tonic.

Red Clover flower:  Red clover has many medical properties. The flowering heads of red clover improve urine production, circulation of the blood and secretion of bile. Red Clover is also rich in phytoestrogens, and contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium, chromium, potassium, and vitamins such as niacin, thiamine and vitamin C.
