8 Tips For Summer Dress

"Etiquette is not about
being 'stuffy.'

It's about putting yourself forward in the best possible way, using courtesy and respect for others as your guide, while still allowing your
own personality to shine!

Sun! I know for some of you, having sunshine is nothing new ... and some parts of our country have had way too much of it lately. But where I live, we are thrilled, because summer has finally arrived!

Things change in the summer. People smile more ... the every day stress seems to lighten up ... life feels more relaxed and casual ... we're doing more things outside.

One thing, however, hasn't changed; we are still going about our daily work. We are meeting with customers/clients, interacting with co-workers and colleagues, and making an impression on others. Your appearance is the first thing that is noticed ... do you look as if you are ready for a day at the beach instead of a day at the office?

1. Keep in mind that the more skin you show, the more casual you appear.

2. Footwear: Flip flops are noisy and unprofessional - period. When it comes to sandals, see #1.

3. Summer is a great time for adding bright color to your outfit -- enjoy!

4. Women: Avoid sheer fabric, short skirts/shorts, spaghetti straps or strapless. If longer length shorts or tailored capris are acceptable in your work place, then wear a professional looking top and/or a lightweight blazer for a polished look.

5. Men: Think carefully before going sock-less. IF sandals are appropriate for your work place, are your feet ready for sandals? Khakis (with a belt) and polo style shirts are a more casual but still professional look.

6. The rule about wrinkles, spots and stains still apply; don't have 'em!

7. Air conditioned buildings can become downright cold; be prepared with a lightweight jacket or sweater.

8. Would you be comfortable meeting with an important client or your boss dressed as you are? If not, time to make some changes.

Acceptable dress for your workplace depends on both the culture of your work environment and the expectations of the people with whom you do business. Regardless of the temperature or what others may wear, you are representing both yourself and your organization.

Remember...

Credibility is important and just because it has warmed up outside doesn't mean it's time to abandon your professional image; it's simply time to adjust your wardrobe to accommodate the higher temperatures. Keep that image intact!
