If you see people with anything but a happy expression on their face, are you the type of person who might say "Smile! It can't be that bad" -- or some such thing? If you are, may I suggest that you stop? For some, it really might be a very difficult time in their lives, for others, perhaps not, but either way, what business is it of yours?
Please don't misunderstand; I am a firm believer in the importance of a smile. A smile indicates that conversation is welcome; it indicates approachability and friendliness, it costs nothing and it is something we are all equipped to do.
However, as I have often said, while you may influence others with your words and actions, the only person you can control is yourself. Telling another person to change their facial expression -- their demeanor -- can be downright offensive, and unless that person is representing you in some manner, their actions, words and body language are only a reflection of themselves.
If you want to see someone smile, try offering one yourself; it may make all the difference.

Remember...
People do not change mood on command. If you would like to see someone smile, give them reason ... make light conversation, share a funny story, offer a compliment. If you are concerned there is something wrong, gently ask, don't pry, and don't demand. A smile, or lack of, reflects off of the wearer. How you approach it reflects off of you. |
