Things to keep in mind as you interact with others

"Etiquette is not about being 'stuffy.'   It's about putting yourself forward in the best possible way, using courtesy and respect for others as your guide, while still allowing your own personality to shine!"

I'm sure you have been in the situation: you want to go from point A to point B, but there is someone blocking your way. So how do
you handle it?

I always find it interesting to watch those people who stand silently, sometimes patiently, but often times irritated and/or impatiently seething, either waiting for the offender to notice their presence or move along themselves.

How about using your words, people?

There are several things that can be said:
  • Excuse me
  • Pardon me
  • May I pass?
  • On your right (or left)

"Move your fat bum!" ... um, no, please skip this one.

People stop for many reasons, sometimes blocking the way without realizing or thinking about what they are doing ... it happens to all of us.

Why stand there, silently fuming at them for not letting you by, when in reality they often don't realize you are there. You are just as much a part of the situation as they are. Take responsibility and speak up!

Remember...

We live in a society that is very self-focused. It doesn't mean we don't care about others, but that we aren't always aware of them.

I equate it to driving in traffic. We will usually let the person merge into our lane; the problem is, we often don't see them because we are focusing on what we are doing, where we are going, and how quickly we can get there.

What can you do to become more aware of what is happening around you ... and how will using words or actions have an effect?
