Things to keep in mind as you interact with others

"Etiquette is not about being 'stuffy.'   It's about putting yourself forward in the best possible way, using courtesy and respect for others as your guide, while still allowing your own personality to shine!"

Just as there is parking lot etiquette for vehicles, there are also guidelines for pedestrians. While people are supposed to have the right-of-way in parking lots, in reality cars are creeping around, looking for parking spaces, the exit, and moving in all directions, including backwards ... they are not looking out for you. Parking lots can be more hazardous than streets!

Some things to think about:

1.  When you cross the roadway in a parking lot, go straight across, one side to another. Do not meander, do not cross diagonally, do not walk along the center of the roadway. In other words, move to the side, out of the way of the moving vehicles.

2.  Please, keep your children under control and with you. Letting them run ahead or lag behind you is not safe. They are short, they cannot be seen and they are not aware of the potential danger.

3.  If you stop to have a conversation with another person, make sure you are off to the side and out of the line of traffic.  It is easy to forget, to stop and chat when you come across someone you know, but remember that there are other activities taking place around you. Are you literally holding up traffic?

4.  When using crosswalks and at street corners, look before stepping out into traffic. When a vehicle does stop for you, a friendly wave and "Thank you" is always appreciated.

5.  Walking and texting are not a good mix. How often do you see someone coming towards you, head down, fairly oblivious to what is going on around him? Now imagine you are a vehicle ... It is not possible to pay 100% attention to your surroundings while texting.     This video of the woman texting as she falls into a fountain at a mall speaks for itself.

Remember...

Pedestrians do have the right-of-way in many situations but that doesn't guarantee their safety. You are going face to headlight with a thousand pound vehicle and in all likelihood, you will lose. You can be right, but you can also be seriously hurt, or dead.
