Etiquette Awareness

Tips, suggestions and stories...

Things to keep in mind as you interact with others

"Etiquette is not about being 'stuffy.'   It's about putting yourself forward in the best possible way, using courtesy and respect for others as your guide, while still allowing your own personality to shine!"

We run into all sorts of people and unfortunately, they don't always treat
us -- or speak to us -- nicely. So how do you respond? Some people are quick thinkers, able to come back with an immediate response, then walk away and never give the interaction another thought.

Then there are those of us, myself included, who often find ourselves at a loss for words. We do come up with the perfect rebuttal -- hours later.

So how do we get through those uncomfortable situations?

Responding less than courteously to an impolite comment only leads to two people behaving rudely, which does nothing to move things forward.

Be prepared with some basic, easy to remember responses:

"Wow." Just wow. Let the comment hang on its own.
"That's an interesting thought/comment."
"I'm not sure what to say about that."
"Let me think about that and get back to you."
"Really."

Some other options would be to say nothing in response, change the topic, or excuse yourself from the conversation.

However you choose to handle the situation, take a (mental) step back, a deep breath and move on. You will be the better person because of it.

Remember...

Take the high road when you run into awkward situations. It may be difficult the first few times, but the more often you do, the easier it becomes. People will judge you by your actions and words, regardless of what is said to you -- just as they will those around you.
