Things to keep in mind as you interact with others

"Etiquette is not about being 'stuffy.'   It's about putting yourself forward in the best possible way, using courtesy and respect for others as your guide, while still allowing your own personality to shine!"

Whether you work in a cubicle "cube farm", an open bullpen seating arrangement, or have a private office to call your own, it can be like living in a goldfish bowl; your words and actions are on view to everyone around you.

1.  Sounds travel:

  • Use your library voice
  • If you play music, use a headset
  • Be aware of discussing confidential matters as there is little privacy
  • Keep your personal cell phone on silent or vibrate
  • When you leave your desk, forward or silence your phone so co-workers don't have to listen to non-stop ringing
  • Avoid screen savers that make noise

2.  Respect the space of your co-workers:

  • The cubicle/space next to yours is someone's office
  • Don't borrow belongings without letting them know/asking permission
  • Avoid the "gopher" syndrome -- no popping over the top of cubicles for conversations ... walk around!
  • If you overhear private information, keep it to yourself
  • Beware of smells ... strong smelling food, perfumes, etc.
  • Practice good hygiene, but please, not in public!

3.  Your surroundings say a lot about you:

  • Keep it tidy and clean to reflect your professionalism
  • Do decorate your space to show your individualism but be aware of corporate culture -- private banking & wealth management vs. advertising

Whether your are directly involved and working in this type of arrangement or passing through as a colleague or guest, extending courtesies will go a long way towards creating good will in the office, generating a more enjoyable and productive environment for everyone.

Remember...

The respect you show to others through your knowledge and use of office etiquette provides your colleagues and the people around you with an impression as to the type of person you are.
